Headed to State

M-ettes second, Mustangs fifth at divisionals

The Malta Mustangs and M-ettes are sending a total of nineteen athletes to the 2018 State B Track Meet in Laurel this weekend.

This comes after the M-ettes were able to take home second place with 81 points at the 2018 North-East Divisional Meet at Great Falls High School on Saturday, May 19. The Mustangs took fifth place in the men's event with 41 points.

"We thought we would have a chance at third or maybe fourth with both the boys and girls," Malta Coach Tad Schye said. "We overachieved with our placing and taking care of ourselves. With the Mustangs, we had a few things not go our way but we are such a young team that it's a good place to be and something to build off on."

Glasgow swept both events, with the Scotties team scoring 168 and the Lady Scotties scoring 155. Fairfield took second in the men's event, scoring 132. Cut Bank took third in both events. The Wolves scored a total of 62 points and the Lady Wolves scored 77.

Ten M-ettes and nine Mustangs will see action in Laurel on Friday, May 25.

M-ETTES

The M-ettes were led by freshman Erica Smith who qualified for a school-high of five events.

Smith won the triple jump event with a mark at 33-5, giving Malta their fifth straight divisional triple jump title. The streak began with Sophia Stiles, who won the title her freshman season and won the title in each year of her high school career.

"Erica has just been very steady," Coach Schye said. "Her triple jump distances are becoming very consistent. She is the one athlete that we have going to state in five events. She will have a busy state track meet and that speaks well of her athleticism."

Smith took second place in long jump with a PR of 15-6.75, fourth in high jump after clearing 4-6, fourth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.45 and sixth in the 200 with a time of 28.28.

Kyleigh Schipman won javelin with a throw of 110-10.
