One Nation, Under God

Get that bird!

If I was a bird hunter, I would already have the perfect dog.

My three-year-old Cocker Spaniel Bruce has always hated birds. At times he can be seen or heard barking at grackles that nest in a tree in our backyard.

I myself have had my beef with the green-headed nuisance birds. They tend to take over the bird-feeders that I put out for the finches every year.

I rid our feeders of grackles by using only thistle seeds last year. But as soon as I tried the variety seeds, I learned they come right back, scaring any other bird away.

I have also found that they like to steal dog food from Bruce and bathe in his water bowl. I stopped that by putting up compact discs that spin with the wind and scare the birds away.

After deterring the grackles from their preferred choice of food, I looked outside and to my surprise, a grackle was screaming at Brucey as if to give our poor dog warnings.

Then I noticed that every time Brucey trots across the yard, the grackles dive-bomb Brucey, usually one at a time.

I thought about asking for my father-in-laws' pellet gun to practice my marksmanship. Then I went to Google to see what people do in this very situation. As it turns out, they are only dive-bombing Bruce because they have a nest in the tree in our backyard.

Luckily, for now I am willing to bet that the grackles will be gone after their young leave the nest.

I feel bad for Brucey and then I think, one day he is going to snatch one of those jokers out of the air. He is a bird dog after all.

PJ and Lincoln are doing well. One of the most common questions I get is if PJ likes Lincoln. Yes he does. He loves his little brother and to my knowledge there is no hostility. I think he only wishes Lincoln was bigger, so that they could play with toys together.

I have found out that PJ really loves America's Funniest Home Videos, which is great because it is a show that we watch together as a family; If Lincoln lets us. Public Service Announcement. Lincoln is loud! And I hate to say it but if he was our firstborn, he would probably be an only child.
