100 years ago

July 11, 1918

The Phillips County Farm Bureau was taking steps toward asking the federal government for assistance for needy farmers. "Crop conditions have been such during the past two years, that unless a large number of our farmers can secure assistance this year they will be unable to continue farming operations another year."

The streets of Malta were being graded and fixed "as good as possible to fix gumbo roads without paving or gravel." The expense of grading one block on Fifth Avenue was estimated at $25. Work was done under the supervision of Engineer Hanscom with Toots Pray on the engine and Street Commissioner Vert on the grader.

The 1918 class of registrants were to be called to the colors in August.

Carl Veseth had departed for a few weeks stay in Alabama.

The Farmers Elevator members had elected Harvey Huthcraft, William Thompson, J. N. Mangis and Peder Paulson to the board of directors.

July 8, 1943

Regina man injured by car at Hays Celebration

Aime Peigneux, Regina rancher, was injured Sunday at the Hays Rodeo when he stepped from his car directly into the path of another vehicle.

He was brought to the Malta hospital where he was treated for a severely injured ankle and cuts and bruises.

Oxarart inured in stabbing affray

J. M. (Mitch) Oxarart, Content sheepman, is in the Survant hospital recovering from a knife wound in his right side and Antonio Herrera, Mexican beet worker, is in the county jail as the result of a quarrel in a local bar about 9 o'clock Sunday evening.

Oxarart's condition was reported as good Wednesday evening. He was stabbed with the three-inch blade of a pocket knife.

Herrera was expected to plead guilty to second degree assault Wednesday morning but Judge John Hurly postponed the filing. Herrera claims Oxarart struck him and knocked him down without provocation and that he drew the knife in self-defense.

14 men answer July Selective Service call

Fourteen men, two of them volunteers, make up this month's Selective Service contingent. The Phillips County men left Wednesday morning to report for physical examinations at Butte. Howard C. Haynes of Saco was leader and Jennings M. Guldseth of Malta, assistant leader.

Volunteers were Clifton P. O'Connel of Saco and Roger H. Ulrich of Malta. Others who answered the call were the following: James J. Johnson, Malta; Archie H. Lucht, Saco; Harding I. Yeater, Malta; William L. Francke, Malta; Phil D. Azure, Zortman; Clarence O. Burton, and several other gentlemen from outside of Phillips County.

July 4, 1968

Craig Stiles third in nation in frosh javelin

Glen Flatt, Malta High School track coach, received word this week from the publication "Track and Field News," that Craig Stiles was third in the nation as a javelin hurler in his freshman year of high school.

The national record for a freshman javelin thrower was 186'2" and was established in 1964, but that record was smashed three times this year. Stiles beat the (then) record at the State Track Meet on May 18 in Billings, making him the third ranking freshman in the state (throws of 197'6" and 198'3" were also recorded in the nation.)

Father's Day picnic at Loring

The Northern Lights 4-H Club Community Picnic was held on Father's Day.

Larry Dyrdahl finished in first place in the pie eating contest and Gary Compton was second. In the three-legged race for adults, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Cowan were the winners. Other activities on the day included a picnic lunch, games, a tug of war, a baseball game, supper and square dancing with Gene Cowan doing the calling.

John Moore won the sack race for kids and Bud Bradley won the sack race for adults. Gene Compton and Ricky Grabofsky came in first in the kid's three-legged races. Mrs. Bud Bradley won the rolling pin throwing contest.

Following supper, a skit "Lovers of a Park Bench" was presented by Kathy Grabofsky with Ricky Grabofsky, Dixie Cowan, John Moore, Sr., Mrs. Gene Cowan, Bud Bradley, John Flansaas, Mrs. Delmar Dyrdahl and Mrs. Bud Bradley participating. A good crowd attended the festivities.

Question: What was the best part of the 3rd of July Parade?

B.C. Reeve: The very good turnout for such rainy weather. I'm impressed.

Susan Butler: My son, Jimmy, being in the parade!

Fred Olson: All of it! It was great participation.

Marie Mingneau: The miniature horses.
