Three Malta swimmers at Glendive meet

With only three meets left before the divisional meet in Chinook, the Malta Swim team is gearing up for a post-season that won't feature many swimmers.

“Fair is during state, so if you aren't (planning) to go to state, you can't go to divisionals because it takes a place from someone else that could go,” said Malta Swim Team Head Coach Shay Garfield. “We will find out have many kids we think are going this week.”

The team only fielded three swimmers at the Glendive Meet last weekend. The meet began on Saturday, June 30 and ended on Sunday, July 1.

“It seems like July is pretty busy for people,” Garfield said. “A lot of people are going on family vacations, going on trips, and a lot of different things.”

As far as performance, Coach Garfield was proud of how her team competed.

“Everyone made it into the top six of their events again,” said Coach Garfield. “We had a pretty good meet last weekend.”

Jahmiah Huffman-LaBrie won the 50 Backstroke with a time of 54.16.

Darrow Messerly took first place in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:25.61.

Denvyr Tuss' best event was the 50 backstroke, where she finished second with a time of 48.98.

“There's good races and bad races but for the most part everyone was happy with how they did,” Coach Garfield said. “With that meet being so far away, you just hope to get pretty close to your times and everyone did very well.”

As they hit the pool for another week of practice, the team's approach will be pretty consistent until the end of the swim year.

“Each week is a lot of repetition,” Coach Garfield said. “Two days of the week we do long-distance and technique and the other two days we do sprints.

The last day of the week is much different.

“On Friday we just do easy swims and then have some fun at the end of practice,” Coach Garfield said.

The Malta Swim Team has their sights set on Sidney, as they will take on the town's Olympic sized pool. The meet is scheduled to begin on Saturday, July 7, and will end on Sunday, July 8.
