Landusky Firefighters train ahead of Fun Day

It was mostly fun and games at Saturday's Landusky Fun Day, but there was also some serious business being attended to as well.

The Landusky Foundation hosted the day's events which included games for the children on hand, a chilidog potluck feed which included a beautifully decorated, patriotic themed cake, a flea market rummage sale, silent auctions, 50-50 split the pot and horses. The day's activities took place in the front yard of the old schoolhouse/ Community Center with a turnout of at least 75 for lunch.

"It has been four or five years since we have held this event and we don't want to compete with the Zortman Fourth of July celebration," Landusky Foundation's Darlene Kolczak said. "With the Fourth being on a Wednesday this year, we thought (Saturday) would be a good time to bring this day back to Landusky."

Children's games included a football and pumpkin toss, Plinko and several different types of running events including a bubble race (the children each had to blow 10 bubbles at the midway point of the track) and a three-legged race. Following all the children's game, each child who participated was able to pick up an armful of toys, candy and other goodies from the prize table.

Ahead of the fun and games, members of the Landusky Volunteer Fire Department met at the town's fire hall to be trained on new equipment purchased following a $6,000 grant from the Montana Wildlife Relief Fund (the town of Zortman received a $2,000 grant from the same fund.) Former Phillips County Sheriff Tom Miller was on hand on the day to help with training on the new equipment.

Landusky Volunteer Firefighter Bob Maxwell said the $6,000 was used to purchase four handheld radios, four 20-pound fire extinguishers for use in winter chimney fires, mop-up hoses, fire flaps and a dozen fire retardant shirts.

"That is a lot of money for a small community and every little bit helps," Maxwell said. "Today, Tom is going to explain which channel is which on the radios, what they are used for and what is most important. And then, if anyone needs any help on how to start the fire equipment, we were going to take them through that."

The fire equipment Maxwell spoke of is the Landusky tender truck which the volunteers secured from the Phillips County Volunteer Fire Department last Fall.

Upcoming events in Landusky at the Community Center include Everet's Memorial on Thursday, August 9 and Ace's Memorial on Saturday, August 18.
