Boots and Saddles

The LaBrie twins talk rodeo

The Phillips County Saddle Club hosted the second Boots and Saddles Rodeo event of 2018 last Saturday, July 21.

The PCN caught up with a pair of riders that have a lot in common. Twins Karlie and Kenzie LaBrie, both ten-years-old, shared a few thoughts about riding in the Boots and Saddles rodeo and sibling rivalry at the event.

Karlie recalled her barrel race run this day, which she ran with her 20-year-old quarter horse named Whiskers.

"He took off and then I turned into the first barrel and then I turned into the next one and then the third one," Karlie said.

The ride was business as usual for Karlie who could be seen confidently riding her horse around the Trafton Arena inside and out.

"There was no trouble," said Karlie who also does pole bending.

A lot of her confidence could be attributed to the time that she puts in with Whiskers.

"A few times a week," Karlie said, after being asked how many times she rides her horse.

Karlie gave her advice on what it takes for a good pole bending run.

"Looking ahead and not hitting a pole," Karlie said with helped from her father.

Kenzie rode a 23-year-old Quarter horse-thoroughbred named Dude, who stands taller then Whiskers.

Kenzie was asked what she likes about riding in the Boots and Saddles Rodeo.

"I don't know," she initially responded.

But then she was asked what her favorite event was.

"Doing barrels," Kenzie said.

Karlie was asked if she and her sister ever get really competitive.

"Sometimes," Karlie said.

Kenzie was asked the same question and responded similarly, but she reassured that there were no fist fights or wrestling matches despite their father being the wrestling coach at Malta High School.

Lynnel, the mother of the duo was then asked if there was a sibling rivalry between Karlie and Kenzie.

"Oh yeah, there is a little bit once in a while," Lynnel said. "It depends on what it is."

She was then asked if there was any fights that had to be broken up.

"Daily," Ryan responded with a laugh.

Karlie was asked what it was like to have a twin sister.

"It's fun," Karlie said.

Kenzie responded to the same question with a shoulder shrug.

Though they are twins, the duo have individual sports that they prefer. While both play basketball, Karlie plays soccer and Kenzie is into volleyball.

As for rodeo, the family decided to enroll the twins into the boots and saddles rodeo, despite neither Ryan nor Lynette riding in the youth rodeo in their past.

"We have always been around horses and my dad (Kevin Shettel) was in Boots and Saddles when he was younger and my sister was in it, I just never was in it myself," Lynnel said. "But I was always around horses and we have a ranch and cattle, so we rode growing up."

She was asked what it was like watching her daughters including Kallie, their younger daughter, who does in fact wrestle.

"It's fun," Lynnel said. "It's fun to watch them learn new things and interact with their horses."
