Mustangs hold Blue & White Scrimmage

The Malta Mustangs held their annual Blue & White Scrimmage on Friday, August 17, at Malta’s practice field on the north side of Malta High School.

With the threat of possible smoke pollution cancelling the event, Malta’s first public outing as a team featured a clear sky, calm weather and a grill out by the Malta Athletic Club.

The PCN caught up with seniors Andres Lopez and Miles Bunk, two of only six seniors on the team, before their last Blue and White Scrimmage of their football career with Malta.

“It feels really nice,” Lopez said. “I am kind of sad because it is my last year but I’m excited for it.”

Bunk echoed the sentiment of his longtime teammate. Bunk was also asked how practices have been going for the team.

“Things are going pretty good,” Bunk said. “Everybody is young, so it’s going to be a tough season at the start. But it looks like it’s going to be pretty good.”

In previous seasons Bunk helped anchor the defensive line and offensive line, while Lopez played running back and linebacker.

In a previous interview, Coach Jim Benn alluded to the fact that Malta’s offense would likely be more aggressive through the air, having a quarterback with a throwing background in Kooper Oxarart. Lopez was asked about how that may affect his role coming out of the backfield.

“I honestly think that our running game is going to be pretty good but we have put in a lot more passing plays in this year and our quarterback has a heck of a game,” Lopez said.

Bunk who could be seen making plays at will in 2017, shared how he thought the defensive line was looking.

“It’s going good but we have to be more physical at the line,” Bunk said.
