Mustangs JV team loses heart-breaker to Poplar

The start of this game was nothing like that of Havre, and we didn't come out with the same intensity as our previous game. We quickly gave up a touchdown to Poplar and an ensuing two-point conversion. The tides were not turning, and we were getting marched on again by the tough running of Poplar's offense. Fortunate for us though, we have some ball-hawking defensive backs. Jeremiah Benson gave us a spark with an interception inside our territory. We could not capitalize on the interception and were forced to punt after a quick three and out. Poplar did score again in the first to go up 14-0. The first quarter ended, and we were down, but not out. The second quarter is where our run game started to flourish. We began marching down the field thanks to our running back core and offensive line. We capped off the drive with a three-yard pass from Connor Tuss to Darrow Messerly. Ty Murphy ran the two-point conversion in, and the score was 14-8. We were slowly building momentum. We went into the half down, but the fat lady wasn't singing.

The second half started with another Poplar touchdown. The score was 22-8 at this point in the game. Our guys didn't falter at this point. Our defense made some crucial stops with our defense causing fumbles and picking the ball off. Bobby Dolphay had a fumble recovery, and Cash Salsbery had an interception. In the third quarter, we scored off a Ty Murphy two-yard run for a touchdown. The two-point attempt failed. The score was 22-14. We were stopping them on defense, so we needed one more chance in the last quarter.

In the fourth quarter, we got back on offense and were able to march down the field again. We were near the goal line, and Poplar was trying everything to keep us out. Connor Tuss scored on a quarterback keeper from one yard out. The team scored the two-point conversion, and we were tied. It was 22 all, so we were gearing up for overtime. We knew that we wanted the ball second and won the coin toss. The first drive from Poplar in overtime was a score on a dive play. They scored the point after and we had to score to keep playing. We had three really great runs by Cash Salsbery to get us to the five. We had three chances to score after we reached the five and were unable. The game ended 30-22 in favor of Poplar. I was exuberantly proud of our effort in the second half. We lost a heart-breaker but will bounce back against Glasgow at home, Monday, September 24th at 5 p.m.
