Community memorial service was held in Malta for Lawrence Rawdon, who was killed in action in France.

James J. Foley, Phillips County man, was seriously wounded in action in France.

John Crowley had qualified as a sniper in the U.S. Forces.

The average wheat yield in Phillips County was estimated at two bushels per acre.

The school census showed 131 children, 76 of school age, in the Freewater District.

A successful Phillips County Fair at Dodson was held. There was not a dull moment during the program.

September 30, 1943

Shoe coupons must last six months hereafter

It will be six months instead of four between new pairs of shoes for civilians in the future, the Office of Price Administration announced last week.

The cut in civilian shoe rations is necessary, the agency said, because of “heavy drains for military purposes, greatly reduced leather supplies, and manpower shortages.”

The change means that new shoe stamp which becomes valid November 1, will have to last until May 1, unless shoe production should exceed estimates, OPA explained.

Posthumous award of Purple Heart is announced

The posthumous award of the Purple Heart to Cp. Byron D. Hurley was announced this week, according to word received by Mr. and Mrs. Byron Hurley of Wagner.

The following letter was received by the Hurleys from Henry L. Stimson, Secretary of War.

“At the request of the President, I write to inform you that the Purple Heart has been awarded posthumously to your son, Corporal Byron D. Hurley, medical department, who sacrificed his life in defense of this country.”

County girls pledged

Three Phillips County girls pledged Alpha Chi Omega Sorority at State University at Missoula where they are entering as freshmen. The girls are Joyce Stubblefield of Anaconda, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Stubblefield formerly of Phillips County; and Jane Solvie and Dorothy Larson, both of Saco.

13 Phillips County men on October Draft Call

Thirteen men make of Phillips County’s October Selective Service call. Of this number three are volunteers. Donald F. Erickson of Saco will be leader of the group.

Volunteers for the October Call are Felix T. Durocher Jr., and Rex B. Kaufman of Malta, and Ira L. Miller of Forks.

Selectees from Phillips County are Bert Azure and Alex J. Doney, Zortman; Jennings Guldseth, Malta; Lawrence E. Nybo, and Leo A. Scheffelmaer, Saco.

September 23, 1968

Laundry closes, two new shops open

This week see the closing of one of Malta’s oldest businesses and the opening of two new ones.

Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Hillier are closing the Malta Laundry effective Wednesday, September 25, for an indefinite period of time due to health reasons. The business was purchased by Ray Hillier in 1941 and Alvin Hillier took over as manager of the laundry in 1957.

Barbara Jensen is opening a wig service in Malta and is available for wig shows and home wig parties until opening a wig and beauty salon when a suitable location can be found.

Lois Petrie this week announced the opening on October 1 of the Hilo Beauty Shop which will be located in the lobby of the Fifth Avenue Hotel.

In Vietnam

Thomas E. Boling, hospitalman third class with the U.S. Navy, and a former Phillips County resident, is stationed in Da Nang, Vietnam. He has been assigned to the urology clinic, Navel Support Activity in Da Nang.

Janelle McEwen and Kevin Lundstrom were elected to reign as queen and king of the Malta High School homing coming this past week.

Red Hatters head to Spokane

Four local Red Hatters boarded Amtrak last Friday to attend the Red Hatters Convention in Spokane, Wash., over the weekend. Making the trip were Sandy Lett, Sharon Miller, Judy Olson, and Marlene Holman, head of the local organization. The group was joined in Spokane by Cleo Phillips, a local member, who made the trip by car.
