Mavericks defeat Poplar in five; Fall to Scobey, Lustre

The North Country Mavericks split last weekend's games defeating Class B's Poplar Indians in Saco on Friday, October 5, and losing to Scobey on Saturday, October 6.

In the team's win over Poplar, the scores were 25-21, 21-25 , 25-17, 17-25, and 15-12.

"Communication and staying energetic were the keys to our win," Senior hitter Kaitlyn McColly told the PCN.

McColly's aggressive play proved her point as she led the Mavericks with 17 of the team's 30 kills. McColly also had seven of the team's 17 blocks.

The team was unfazed by the fact that they had to face a Class B team.

"I don't think of them as anything special," McColly said. "All they have is more kids in their school."

Libero Elise Strommen had 12 of 36 team digs. Jaycee Erickson had six of 22 team aces. Kia Wasson and Erickson tied for the lead in assists with 10 each.

Senior hitter Chaykota Christensen shared what she believed was a key attribute in their win.

"Working together," Christensen said. "We are a team and everyone did their part and put in the effort."

Christensen, Emilie Carrillo, Sarah Boucher and Alysa Jensen were each honored with their families during the Mavericks Senior Night in Saco that night. Though the students primarily attend Hinsdale, the Saco and Whitewater schools have become home to the quartet.

"It's my community," Christensen said. "It was a really good feeling. We were really searching for a win. We dug deep and it was even great to get the win because it was on my senior night."

The team faced some adversity, specifically during the serve-receive faze. Ultimately the team was able to overcome their defensive issues.

"We adjusted when we realized that one part is weak or that we need to cover better," Christensen said. "We would pull someone from the front row back, we adjusted and kept our head up."

In the team's 3-0 loss to Scobey, the scores were 25-11, 25-23, and 25-18.

Jaydyn Erickson led the team with nine of the team's 22 kills. K. Wasson had nine of the team's 18 assists. Strommen had 13 of the team's 36 digs. Christensen and McColly each had a block. McColly, J. Erickson, and K. Wasson each had two aces.

The team dropped an earlier match to Lustre in Lustre on Thursday night, but the team hopes to regroup and make a late season push as they prepare for a three team district meet in a couple of weeks.

This week, the Mavericks will take on Class B's Harlem Wildcats on Thursday, October 11, at 5 p.m. in Whitewater. The Mavericks will then travel to face Circle-Broadus on Saturday, October 13. The Mavericks will host Malta in Saco on Tuesday, October 16, at 5 p.m.
