One Nation, Under God

Dep. Niehoff joins PCSO

The Phillips County Sheriff’s Office welcomed Jesse Niehoff, it’s newest deputy on Wednesday, October 3.

The hire was the first for Deputy Jerry Lytle and Deputy Kevin Metcalf, who are expected to be elected as Sheriff and Under Sheriff on November 6, running unopposed, after Lytle won the Primary Election on Tuesday, June 5.

“Sheriff Scott Moran and Under Sheriff Burt Peigneux left the hiring up to myself and Kevin Metcalf as we'll be taking over in January,” Lytle said.

While searching through the many applications, Lytle and Metcalf found an applicant moving to Malta from Gillette, Wyo., Niehoff.

“We liked his keen interest in getting into law enforcement,” Lytle said. “While he was still in Gillette he was going to apply for the Gillette Police Department and once he and his wife decided to move to Malta, he applied even before moving here.”

His interest in the job wasn’t the only thing that caught the attention of Lytle and Metcalf.

“It also seemed like he wanted to help people, which is a very good characteristic to have as a law enforcement officer. I have no doubts he'll be a great addition to the Sheriff's Office.”

Niehoff lives in Malta with his wife Pamela and their three dogs.

He wasn’t brought to the area because of a job with the PCSO, the Niehoffs moves to Malta because of family ties.

“My mom owns a house up here,” Neihoff said. “Grandma moved out and we moved in.”

He has no previous experience with code enforcement, but his mother did.

“My mom was a jailer and that was about it,” Niehoff said.

Prior to moving to Malta, Niehoff worked in Gillette in the oil field, with experience pipe lining and trucking.

“I had a trucking company for a short while,” Niehoff said.

Nehoff has been on the job at PCSO for a couple of weeks and has enjoyed it so far.

“I like it,” Niehoff said. “It seems pretty good and you don’t hear as much activity as you would in other places, so that’s always a good thing.”

As far as why he has had the desire to work as a deputy, Niehoff explained.

“It has always been something I wanted to dabble in,” Niehoff said. “I figured I would get in my experience and make a career of it.”

Niehoff enjoys long range shooting in his spare time, and he used to enjoy riding motocross and snowmobiling.

Though he currently has not attended a law enforcement academy, he is training for and will attend the Montana Law Enforcement Academy in the near future.
