Malta B&G Club begin fundraising for building repairs

The Malta Boys & Girls Club is launching fundraising efforts to complete much-needed repairs on their existing building. The program is housed in the former St. Mary's Catholic School, where it has operated since its beginning in 2005.

Built in the early 1900's, the building was the first high school in Phillips County. Through its lifetime the building has served various roles as a high school, elementary school, junior high, and private K-8 school. Today it continues its purpose of serving youth and families in the community by providing a home for the Malta Boys & Girls Club afterschool and summer programs.

These programs include an off-site classroom during the school year where students who have missed significant school can attain the credits they need to graduate. In addition, the Club offers Family Fun & Educational Nights, Adult literacy classes, and a location for the Malta High School students reACT! Group's drug-free alternative activities, including Friday Night Alive after local sports games and Lock-In Events after Snowball & Prom.

Weather and wear has taken its toll on the building, and repairs are needed. Water from the leaky roof has damaged windowsills and floors throughout the building, and Club activities have been canceled several times in the past few years due to flooding from the damaged roof. In addition, the concrete platform and stairs at the exterior entrance have worn down and are beginning to crumble, causing a safety concern.

The Club is seeking contractors, volunteers, and additional funding for this project. The total cost for the repairs is approximately $60,000, and to date they have raised $15,000, including a grant from the Gianforte Family Foundation. They are currently doing a fundraiser raffle, with all proceeds going toward the building project.
