Polar Plunge dives into Glasgow

Malta and Glasgow will unite... again.

The coldest fundraiser on the Hi-Line will travel to Valley County in a tag-team effort as both counties will meet up at the Glasgow Civic Center on Saturday, December 1, at 2 p.m. for the 20th Annual Special Olympics Montana Polar Plunge.

Though the event has been held at Nelson Reservoir over the past couple of years, the Phillips County side of the event will get a break from hosting the bone-chilling event.

"It is in Glasgow this year because it's their turn," said Denise Black, the event coordinator for Malta.

This year's event will also be called "The Middle of Nowhere Plunge," given that it has been reported as such in the national news recently, that Glasgow, Mont. Is the middle of nowhere U.S.A.

While still out in the cold, this year's participants won't plunge into a natural outdoor body of water but instead a tank, as described by Black.

"It's some sort of tank," Black said. "It will be deep, and it will be cold."

The event will coincide with the Glasgow's Christmas Stroll and Parade of Lights.

Despite the event's location change, Black is confident that the event will still be great.

"It will be good no matter where it's at," Black said.

The joint effort between Phillips and Valley County paid off as the local participants raised over $12,000 last year, that each jumper donated to their respective Special Olympic Charity.

"It felt really good to raise that amount of money considering we had 25 jumpers last year and only six the first year," Black said. "It was really big last year, and it was really good."
