Monday morning fire caused much damage

Extensive damage was done to the Jacobs Plumbing and OK Hardware Store and the basement of the Fifth Avenue Hotel early Monday morning when the fire broke out in the basement of the building about 6 a.m.

The basement of the building suffered extensive damage and cost of repair was estimated by building owner Roger Ereaux at about $15,000.

Extensive damage to the hardware store also was caused by the smoke and water and owner Robert Jacobs estimated the damage to stock and fixtures at $20,000.

Smoke damage in the hotel itself was considerable and will necessitate painting work.

Jacobs Hardware is open for business as usual and will not move into their new location across the street until after Christmas.

Both Jacobs and Ereaux were highly complimentary of the way the Malta Volunteer Fire Department handled the fire.
