Malta City Council Recap

The second to last Malta City Council meeting of 2018 was held at Malta City Hall last week on Tuesday, and Public Works Director Jim Truelove informed the council of several bits of information including a new lighting system near the footbridge at the Skatepark near Hill Crest.

Director Truelove said that Malta Electric Contractors (MEC) conducted the work and social media was abuzz shortly after with thanks to the City for the new light. Though most of the response of the new light was positive, a few residents in Hill Crest suggested the new light was too bright — the light can be seen from several blocks away at the time of this writing — and Director Truelove said he would dial the light down a bit.

In related news, Director Truelove said that the new bathrooms are nearly completed at the Skatepark and the tin structure should be getting fixtures inside this week (though the timing is not of the essence as the Skatepark will be unusable as soon as the snow flies.) Director Truelove said that the stucco has been placed on the bathroom’s exterior and the interior floors have been painted.

A public hearing was held at the Tuesday night meeting to discuss a resolution to approve property tax benefits for building reconstruction, namely the Liquor Haven building owned by Scott and Gina Simanton. The Simantons included a letter addressed to the Mayor and Council with their request which stated that the building now houses three thriving businesses and the entire building now meets all commercial code laws. Following the public hearing, the City Council approved the resolution 4-0.

“They did a really good job,” Councilman David Rummel said of the Simanton’s building refurbishment. “The building looks beautiful.”

In other news, the City Council voted to cancel the December 25 meeting as it falls on Christmas and elected to meet later in the week to take care of needed housekeeping.

The meeting included the second reading of a proposed change to the City’s animal ordinance.

It was also announced that the City recently hired Sally Wright as a part-time Parks and Rec Director.

In meeting notes from the first Malta City Council meeting of December, the Council approved the purchase of a new garbage truck for the City. The City received several bids from truck sellers but only one met the specified requirements established by Mayor John Demarais and Public Works Director Truelove. A motion was made and passed, 4-0, to purchase a Freightliner M2-106 with a Heil 22-yard Side Loader Body for $221,081.00.
