Adolph Krohn and Miss Ila Geeting were married at the J. E. Johnson home in Malta.

Prohibition was to go into effect in Montana at midnight of December 30, and local pubs were endeavoring to dispose of their stocks before the deadline.

The Zortman Mercantile store was destroyed by fire in an early morning blaze.

"Brother Van" Ordsel had paid a visit to the locality and preached at the Little White Church and at Freewater.

December 9, 1943

Saco man injured when building falls

Pat Buffington of Saco received emergency treatment at Hinsdale and then was taken to the Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow, following injuries received when a building slipped from a jack and fell on him northwest of town. The building struck across his hips, fracturing his pelvis.

Prairie Fire takes hay on Matador Ranch

A prairie fire destroyed approximately 50 tons of hay on the Matador meadow on Big Warm Creek last Friday afternoon. The fire, carried by high wind, burned over a 160-acre meadow and for a time threatened the meadows on the Veseth Ranch. Loss is estimated at $500.

Request 1,000 Mexican beet workers

A request for 1,000 Mexican nationals to work in the Chinook sugar factory district next season has been made as the result of a labor conference held in Malta last Friday afternoon.

It was believed that with the Japanese workers who have leased acreage or who are staying in the valley, in addition to the available local labor, 1,000 Mexicans will handle the acreage next year.

Record held by county flock

Close of a record-keeping year for extension poultry demonstrations farms reveals that the high flock among those of more than 100 hens was that owned by Mrs. C. C. Stine of Phillips County, according to Harriette E. Cushman, extension poultry specialist at Montana State College.

Mrs. Stine's 123 white leghorns laid a total of 26,566 eggs or an average of 217 eggs per hen during the year.

Coloring Contest Winner

Rita Welch, the 12-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Welch, received a new bicycle as she won M.D.U. Co's "Mod Momma" coloring contest for her coloring contest entry.

Justice of Peace offers traffic offenders Christmas Special

Justice of the Peace Gayle Stahl recently moved into her new courtroom in the basement of the Phillips County Courthouse, located where the Sheriff's Office used to be.

To celebrate her new location, the Justice of the Peace is offering a holiday special to persons with outstanding traffic citations between now and December 31.

For every dollar worth of canned goods an offender brings with him or her to Judge Stahl's office, she will knock $2 off the fine (limit is 50 percent of the fine) and the canned goods will go to the Malta Food Bank.

Question: All the leading indicators say the economy is improving. What do you think?

Leonard Leader: Our economy is not improving! It may be in other areas of the country, but not here.

Wilma Simon-Matte: I think it is. People are still spending. The Free-Trade Agreement wouldn't have passed if there weren't money and resources to back it up.

Marlin Cilz: I'd say it is!

Rhonda Waters: I really don't believe it is. It isn't at our place.

Centennial Medallions

Official 2009 City of Malta Centennial Medallions have arrived from the mint and are now on sale at the City Office. Cost is $10 each. Proceeds from the sale of the medallions will be used to help finance the City's centennial celebration during the summer of 2009. The City of Malta was officially incorporated during the summer of 1909.

New agent joins staff at Phillips County Insurance

Jake Stuart has joined the staff at Phillips County Insurance as an insurance agent.

A 2004 graduate of Rocky Mountain College in Billings, with a degree in accounting, Stuart worked for three years Northwestern Mutal Financial Network in Billings before coming back to Phillips County and is married to Ashley (Hammond) Stuart, a former Whitewater resident.
