Robert "Bob" Michael

MALTA- Robert "Bob" Michael passed away November 30, 2018, at Phillips County Hospital.

His family received friends 7 p.m., Tuesday, December 4, 2018, at Kirkwood Memorial Chapel. Memorial services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 5, 2018, at Malta Lutheran Church with Military Honors. Condolences for the family may be left at http://www.kirkwoodfuneralhome.com.

Bob was born September 14, 1934, to Arthur & Phyllis (Calendar) Michael in Berwick, Pa. He was raised on the family farm at "Shickshinny" (an Indian word for five valleys.) He graduated High School in 1952. He was very active in music and played sax in school bands and PA State Bands. He attended Westchester College where he received his Bachelor's in Elementary education and Music. In college, he played sax in several dance bands on weekends and during summers. After college, he joined the Marines and served as a Second Lt. After the Marines he was a teacher and counselor in Delaware. He later became a member of the Montana Army National Guard. He was on the National Guard Shooting Team for a few years.

Bob married Judy Frederick on August 23, 1966. They moved to Montana where he worked in Lolo as superintendent of schools also in Saco as superintendent of schools. All the time he continued his education, eventually earning his Masters. Bob went to work for Mountain Peaks Inc. in the northeastern area for them with counseling youth and adults that had been referred from the court system. He also worked for the AWARE program as a counselor. In the fall of 1986, he and Judy bought the Malta Sports Center; he managed it until the Museum bought the building for the P.C. Museum. He became the Probation Office for Phillips County from Oct. 1, 1992, until retiring on June 30, 1999. After retiring from PO job ,Judge John McKeon appointed him to the Juvenile Youth Court of 12+ Phillips Co. members representing all areas and ages, he served for 11 years.

Bob was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, reloading his own ammo, bird watching and anything outdoors. He enjoyed target shooting and trap shooting. He target shot at the new shooting range south of town at least once a week until two weeks before his death. He learned how to shoot left-handed after his stroke and became very good at it. Bob was a member of Malta Masonic Lodge #57, where he held several offices. He was also a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Judy; brother, Keith Michael of Michigan; brother-in-law, Peter (Marcia) Frederick of New Hampshire; his "adopted granddaughter" Kristina Uphaus; numerous nieces and nephews; and his dog, Solo.
