The Mavericks 2017-18 basketball season ended on Friday night of last year's Eastern C Divisional Tournament as the team fell to the Mon-Dak Thunder.

This season, the team will feature a new style of play as well as a familiar face leading the charge, as longtime Hinsdale Coach Ralph Ellsworth was named head coach of the Mavericks this season.

"We have fifteen kids, so we have the numbers," Coach Ellsworth said of his team. "We have the speed. There is not a lot of height, but they are coming along good with my system, so I think we will be pretty competitive."

Having to step away from the game due to health reasons, Coach Ellsworth has not been on a basketball court in four years, not even to see his new team. This has not stopped him from making sure that his team is ready for the regular season.

"We are getting well acquainted and they are working really hard," Coach Ellsworth said.

The team graduated Trace Simonson, Austin Leatherberry, and Chris DePuydt. Simonson and DePuydt were both named to the 3C All-Conference List in two consecutive seasons.

The team does return sophomore Loden Idler, who made the All-Conference list his freshman season. Idler came off of the bench at the start of the season last year but earned a starting spot in the second half of the season. Ellsworth believes that Idler has the potential to be an All-State athlete.

"We need to get him in control," Coach Ellsworth said. "We need to get him to play hard and fundamentally for 32 minutes and we will do well with him."

John McColly is the team's lone returning senior.

"He is the only senior we have, so I am expecting him to help lead the team and the rest of the team is fairly young, so we will see how that goes," Coach Ellsworth said.

The junior class consists of Cordell Younkin, Dustin Ostrom, Brady Albus, Ryder Jones, and Ty Murphy. Murphy was a starter last season, who played tough defense and showed the ability to shoot.

"He is a hard-working kid and hopefully we will get some good things out of him," Coach Ellsworth said.

The sophomore class consists of Jon Rey Taylor, Jeremy Longtree, Jesse Lee, Idler, Randy Gairrett, and Beau Simonson. Lee has also seemed to have earned the starting nod from Coach Ellsworth.

"He has got good speed, good strength," Coach Ellsworth said. "He is a little green, but we are hoping to really get him into the flow of things, so he can be a factor."

At post, Coach Ellsworth may be looking to start Simonson.

"He has a lot of size and a lot of ability," Coach Ellsworth said. "He doesn't realize how good he can be yet. So, hopefully, we can get him to improve and get a little bit better."

The freshman class consists of Trey Johnson, Aidan Albus, and Kyle Johannesen.
