One Nation, Under God

A pleasant surprise

Lady Coyotes impress despite building new chemistry

The Dodson Lady Coyotes lost their first two games, but the team showed their coaches reasons to be optimistic.

The team saw their first action of the year in Wolf Point for the Wolf Point Tip-Off.

“I was really happy with the way things went,” Lady Coyotes Head Coach Deserae KillEagle said. “I was really nervous. We knew that Froid-Lake had made it to state, they lost three seniors, but still had three six-foot girls on their team. With Bainville, we had no clue what we were up against. We knew that we needed to work hard, we had nothing to lose, and I was beyond proud of their performance this weekend.”

The Lady Coyotes were defeated 53-34 by Froid-Lake on Friday, December 7. Dodson was led in scoring by Kailee Henry who had 22 points, scoring five treys in the process. Christina Jaynes had 4 points, Lindsay Fetter had 4 points, Ireland Best had 2 points and Ella Messerly had 2 points.

“We are basically starting with this new team and bringing them together,” Coach KillEagle said. “The only thing I asked was that they work hard, they keep each other going and not to get frustrated because we knew the dynamics going into all of this.”

She said that the teams they would be facing already built their foundations by playing together for years.

“Don’t forget to have fun because it is supposed to be fun,” Coach KillEagle said to her team. “They did that. They were there for each other. They had each other's back and it was so fun to watch every single one of them step up and work together as a team.”

In the team’s loss to Bainville, 63-51, the Lady Coyotes were led by Henry who scored 16 points. Messerly scored 11 points. Jaynes scored nine points, Fetter scored seven, Best scored four and Serena Chandler scored two.

Coach KillEagle was encouraged by the fan’s response to her team, who at one point only had six athletes.

“I think they surprised the other teams as well because they thought playing us would be a walk in the park and they seemed frustrated that it wasn’t,” Coach KillEagle said.

The Lady Coyotes are scheduled to hold their home opener against Nashua-Opheim on Friday, December 14, starting at 6 p.m. The team will host Scobey on Saturday, December 15. Games are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
