Mavs Basketball

The North Country Mavericks split games last weekend as the team fell to the Glasgow Scotties in Glasgow on Friday, December 14, and then picked up a win over Brockton on Saturday, December 15.

In the Mavericks’ 56-31 win over Brockton, North Country was led by Jesse Lee who had 17 points. Loden Idler had 13 points. Ty Murphy had 12 points. Brady Albus had five points. John McColly had three points. Jon Rey Taylor, Beau Simonson, and Cordell Younkin each had two points.

The Mavericks outscored Brockton in each period. The scores for each period were 17-8, 14-9, 14-7, and 11-7.

“They are pretty limited on kids, so they don’t have a really strong team, but they came out and made their first four shots,” North Country Head Coach Ralph Ellsworth said about Brockton. “They have the ability, but we have more speed than they do and we made it pretty tough on them.”

In the Maverick’s 45-39 loss to Glasgow, Murphy, Idler, and Lee led North Country, each scored 11 points. McColly and Simonson both scored three points. Coach Ellsworth lauded his team’s ability to score points.

“Our boys are all capable of scoring, but when you play a 32-minute game there are only so many opportunities and sometimes only three people score much but they are all capable of scoring,” Coach Ellsworth said.

After trailing Glasgow 26-17 going into half time, the Mavericks fought back in the third quarter, outscoring the Scotties 13-5, trailing only 31-30 going into the fourth quarter. Glasgow outscored North Country 14-9 in the fourth quarter.

“When we went to Glasgow, we didn’t handle their size very well,” Coach Ellsworth said.

Glasgow went 9-of-12 (75%) from the charity stripe, while North Country only sank seven of their 17 free throw attempts (41%).

“That is one of the reasons we didn’t do very well in that game,” Ellsworth said of North Country’s free throw misses.

Ellsworth went on to say that this week the team will work on free throws to improve their percentage in future games as well as communication on defense.

The Mavericks will play against Nashua on Friday, December 21, in Saco. The Mavericks JV will travel to Opheim to face the Viking JV on Thursday, December 20.
