Malta City Council Recap

Publisher's Note: This story is comprised of information from Malta City Clerk Lorie Bond's minutes from the December 11 meeting. With all of the early deadlines out of the way because of the holidays, the PCN will get back to regular news reporting after the new year. Thank you for your patience.

The Malta City Council met for their final regular scheduled meeting for the year on December 11 (one more meeting took place last week on a different day than normal) and during the Public Comment portion of the meeting, Malta High School senior Payton Clausen and teacher Becky Bruce talked about the Farm to Table program underway on campus. Malta Mayor John Demarais told the two that the City had received a complaint about the cornfield grown on campus last year. He said it would be left up to the Council on how to proceed with the field in the future and the Council agreed that the high school should keep the cornfield and could use the city's fire hydrant to irrigate the cornfield. To make it official it will be placed on the agenda this spring. Mayor Demarais thanked everyone for attending the meeting.

During the Department Reports portion of the meeting, Public Works Director Jim Truelove informed the Council that the Public Works Crew had been busy repairing a fire hydrant that was knocked over; he said that he had given a list of vehicles to be removed from City of Malta streets to the Phillips County Sheriff's Office, and said that the Ezzie's Lift Station was back online.

During the Parks and Rec report, Co-Director Julia Tatafu introduced the new Co-Director, Sally Wright, to the council. Wright replaces former Co-Director Natalie Judd in that position. Co-Director Tatafu also reported that a total of 88 children participated in the recent dodgeball classes being held and that a total of 33 girls participated in the cheerleading camp (for a list of several upcoming Parks and Rec classes, see the advertisements on page A3 in this week's PCN).
