Lady Mavericks defeat Dodson, fall to Scobey

The Dodson Lady Coyotes and North Country Lady Mavericks squared off in the Coyote Den for the teams' first game of the 2019 calendar year on Thursday, January 3. Both teams would lose their next games on Saturday, January 5.

In their 54-31 win over Dodson, North Country was led by Kia Wasson who scored 18 points, eight of which came in the first quarter. Kaitlyn McColly scored 16 points. Jaycee Erickson scored eight points. Kelsee Cummings and Jaydyn Erickson each had four points, and Sarah Boucher had two points.

"I feel like we had solid defense and we had only a few turnovers in a fast paced game, which kept us solid as a team tonight," McColly said.

Dodson was led by Kailee Henry who had 11 points. Henry had three treys. Ella Messerly had nine points. Christina Jaynes had nine points and two treys. Lindsey Fetter had two points.

North Country featured plenty of traps, pressures and fast-break layups in their first outing of 2019. The team jumped ahead on an opening 11-4 run in the first quarter and didn't look back. The score by halftime was 25-12.

"We ran our offense really well tonight," Wasson said. "We shortened up our passes which really helped us limit turnovers and score a lot better."

It was apparent that the Lady Mavericks were conditioned because the team had numerous fast break plays throughout the game, a notable contrast to games before the break.

"During break we really pushed ourselves running to try and stay in that good game shape," McColly said. "We also focused on executing everything."

Dodson outscored North Country in the third period 13-12, but then was stifled to only four points in the fourth, while giving up 17 to North Country. Many of those points came due to the fast-break, which was a part of the plan.

"We really focused on pushing the ball up and down the court from the start of the game, so that we could get those fast-break layups towards the end, when we have better legs than they do," McColly said. "We have the subs and we have the bodies."

McColly and Wasson shared what they ate to help them perform well on the court before the game.

"Today, I had a pretzel before the game," McColly said with a smile. "It's really just me. I'm energetic."

Wasson ate a bagel.

McColly knew that in order to beat the Lady Coyotes, they couldn't let Henry take over the game.

"I know Henry is a really good player overall," McColly said. "She can really hit those outside shots and she can also take it to the hoop. Knowing how to defend players like that is the key to our defense."

In the Lady Mavericks' loss to Scobey on Saturday, January 5, North Country was led by Wasson who had 17 points. McColly had 10, Jaycee Erickson had nine, and Cummings had two.

In the Lady Coyotes' 73-50 loss to Roy-Winifred on Saturday, January 5, Dodson was led by Messerly who scored 26 points, Chandler scored eight points, Henry scored eight points, Jaynes had four, Jackson had two, and Fetter had two.
