Wrestlers to host home meet

The Mustang Wrestling team took fifth place at the Harlem Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, January 19.

The Mustangs are set to host their annual wrestling home meets this weekend. The team will hold the 2019 Malta Mixer at 5 p.m. on Friday, January 25. The team will then host the Malta Invitational Tournament on Saturday, January 26.

“A lot of good wrestling goes on at our mixer and invitational on Friday and Saturday,” Mustang Head Coach Ryan LaBrie said. “It is probably one of the toughest in the state at this time going into the (divisional tournament).”

The event will feature over a dozen teams including Circle, Glasgow, Havre, Chinook, Harlem, Wolf Point, CJI, Poplar, Cut Bank, Shepherd, Valier, Fort Benton, and Big Sandy. Conrad will also be at the Malta Invitational for the first time.

“We should have a good turnout,” Coach LaBrie said.

Prior to the Malta events, the team plans to wrestle in Big Sandy on Thursday, January 24, for their mixer.

At the Wildcat Invitational, Glasgow took first place as a team with 140 points. Poplar took second with 127, Cut Bank took third with 113, Shelby took fourth with 93.5, and Malta took fifth with 90.

Malta only took eight wrestlers to the event, but six of those wrestlers placed in their individual classes.

Kolter Schipman led the Mustangs by winning first place in the 132 class. Schipman won his weight class championship by pinning Ty Curry of Valier in 2:31.

“Kolter has been tough all year,” Coach LaBrie said. “He puts the time in and has good work ethic. We kind of knew where we sat going into the Wildcat with the kids that we had seen. We have seen Ty Curry from Valier quite a few times.”

Andres Lopez took second in the 182 weight class, losing the championship match to Nate Gorham of Shepherd by pinfall in 1:59.

Callan Mears also took second place in the 145 weight class after losing to Poplar’s Hunter Reum by pinfall at 5:17.

Mears defeated Glasgow’s John Cremer who defeated him the last time they met.

“That was the week we weren’t feeling very good and we ended up falling to Cremer, but we got that one back in a big way,” Coach LaBrie said.

The 138-pound third place match saw two Mustangs square off as R.C. Skiff and Zac Judd met. Skiff won the match by way of a 4-2 decision. Skiff was awarded third place, while Judd took fourth.

“It was a typical teammate match; not cheering for either one but they went up there, put in a good effort and wrestled hard,” Coach LaBrie said. “Good for both of them placing.”

Luke Lawless took third place in the 285 weight class by pinning Shelby’s Jacob Kingsolver in 1:31.

“Luke has been performing well and has been placing every week since he has been back,” Coach LaBrie said. “He has been right at third and right out of the hunt in some of those championships.”

At the Chinook Mixer of Friday, January 18, Schipman went 2-0 in the 132 class, Mears went 2-0 in the 145 class, Lawless went 2-0 in the 285 class, Lopez went 2-0 in the 182 class, Skiff went 1-1 in the 145 class, Jaden Keeling went 2-0 in the 205 class, Colt French went 2-0 in the 145 class and Judd went 0-1 in the 135 class.
