Coyotes blow past Mavericks

The Dodson Coyotes and North Country Mavericks squared off in a loud and rambunctious match up in Whitewater on Thursday, January 31.

The Dodson Coyotes won the Phillips County clash 73-59, sweeping the season series against the Mavericks. The Coyotes went on to defeat the Roy-Winifred Outlaws 50-46 on Friday, February 1. The Coyotes then fell 72-28 to the Melstone Broncs on Saturday, February 2.

The Mavericks went on to fall 80-38 to the Scobey Spartans on Friday, February 1.

In the Coyote-Maverick game, Dodson was led by junior Shaun Ball who scored 27 points. Ball shared the key to his team's win.

"Teamwork," Ball said after the game.

A few minutes later in another interview, senior Caleb Ditmar echoed Ball's word.

"We played as a team finally," Ditmar said. "We had been trying to play one-on-one lately."

Ball had five of the team's eight treys.

Ditmar scored 12 points in the win, but Ditmar's primary job was slowing down Maverick point guard Loden Idler who was held to nine points, a testament to the offensive threat that Idler presents.

"We did a box and 1 (defense) on Loden tonight," Ditmar said. "I defended him and tried to shut him down."

The Mavericks were led by Ty Murphy who scored 19 points. Jesse Lee had 13 points. Idler had nine points. Beau Simonson had nine points. Jon Rey Taylor had six points and John McColly had three.

"We just kept attacking and pressuring," Dodson's Corbin Lone Bear said. "They were struggling against our pressure defense."

Lone Bear scored seven points, and had a crowd-pleasing slam dunk in the third quarter.

The remaining Dodson scorers included Jeramiah Benson with seven points. Tyrese Messerly had four points. Juliun Benson and Michael Jaynes both had three points.

North Country would score the first two points of the game at the free throw line (Lee), but Dodson went off in the first quarter scoring 23 while holding North Country to nine points. North Country's offense would pick up in the second quarter racking up 17 points, but Dodson would add on 21 during that span. The halftime score was 44-26. North Country outscored Dodson 16-13 in the third and then 17-16 in the fourth.

"We were kind of getting scared in the third quarter because they have a good coach (Mavs head Coach Ralph Ellsworth) and he always has plans," Lone Bear said. "So we had to stay as energized as we were in the first quarter."

In a game laced with fouls, Dodson reached the free throw line for 30 attempts and scored on 19 of them (63%). The Mavericks was 22-of-34 (64%) from the charity stripe.

Earlier that day the Maverick JV team defeated Dodson's JV team 50-34. Dustin Ostrom led the Mavs JV team with a total of 28 points. The game was close until North Country pulled away in the fourth quarter.

"We played tough defense and made sure that we were doing smart passes, we got into good drive lane and we did better not turning over the ball," Ostrom told the PCN.

Ostrom went on to say the Dodson JV dribble-drive offense was effective against him and his team.

In Dodson's win over Roy-Winifred, the Coyotes were led by Ball who had 14 points. Lone Bear had 10. Zerek Jones had eight, Ditmar had seven, Messerly had five points, Jaynes had four, and Sam Main had two.

Jones led Dodson in the team's loss to Melstone, Main had nine points, Lone Bear had four points, Ju. Benson had three, and Ball had two.

With only one weekend left before the 2019 3C District Tournament in Wolf Point, Dodson is scheduled to face the Frazer Bearcubs in Frazer on Friday, February 8. The Coyotes will then host the Lustre Christian Lions in the Coyote Den on Saturday, February 9.

In North Country's loss to Scobey, the Mavericks were led by Idler who scored a game-high 17 points. Taylor and John McColly each added six points. Lee had five, Murphy had three and Simonson had one.

The Mavericks are scheduled to take on Lustre Christian in Lustre on Friday, February 8. The team will then travel to Hinsdale to host Frazer on Saturday, February 9.
