Lady Mavericks ram Lady Coyotes

The North Country Lady Mavericks and Dodson Lady Coyotes clashed in their second meeting of the 2018-19 season and the results was the same as when they met earlier this season.

The Mavericks defeated the Lady Coyotes 59-39 on Thursday, January 31, at the Penguin Palace in Whitewater.

"The key to our win tonight was really buckling down on defense and pushing the floor as hard as we could," Lady Maverick Captain Kaitlyn McColly said.

McColly went on to say that the team's defense and being able to push the ball down-court will be beneficial for a post-season run.

"Pushing the ball down the floor gets us those fast-break layups towards the end of the game," McColly said.

McColly led the charge for the Lady Mavericks, racking up 23 points, 15 of which came in the first half.

Kia Wasson had 20 points, which included four treys. Wasson was found open a few times along the baseline. She shared what goes through her head when she receives the ball.

"I'm thinking either shoot or fake and then drive," Wasson said.

McColly shared what goes through her head during a scoring opportunity.

"When I get the ball to shoot, I think, 'don't airball it.'" McColly said.

Jaydyn Erickson had six points. Danika Soper had four points. Jaycee Erickson had three points. Kelsee Cummings, Elise Strommen, and Sarah Boucher each had two points.

The Lady Coyotes were led by Ella Messerly who had 19 points. Messerly connected on a game-high five treys. Kailee Henry had eight points. Christina Jaynes had six points. Jean Jackson, Lindsay Fetter, and Ireland Best each had two points.

North Country outscored Dodson in all four quarters of the game, 9-4 in the first, 17-13 in the second (the halftime score was 26-17), 16-8, and 17-14.

In North Country's loss to the Scobey Spartans on Friday, February 1, in Scobey, the Lady Mavs were led by Wasson who had 11 points. McColly had ten points. Jaycee Erickson had four points. Cummings had three points. Jaydyn Erickson had two points and Danika Soper had one point.

The Lady Mavs were only down one possession by the end on the first quarter falling behind 11-8. Scobey only allowed one point in the second quarter while pouring on 22. The halftime score was 33-9. The Lady Mavs outscored Scobey 11-7 in the third and both teams scored 11 in the fourth.

The Lady Mavericks are scheduled to take on the Lustre Christian Lady Lions in Lustre on Friday, February 8. The team will then travel to Hinsdale to host the Frazer Bearcubs on Saturday, February 9.

In Dodson's loss to the Roy-Winifred Outlaws on Friday, February 1, in Dodson, the Lady Coyotes were led by Henry who had 24 points. Messerly had 15. Best had two points. Fetter and Serena Chandler had one point each.

Dodson is scheduled to face Frazer in Frazer on Friday, February 8. The Coyotes will then host Lustre Christian in the Coyote Den on Saturday, February 9.
