Girls' 3C All-Conference

Several Class C athletes from Phillips County basketball teams made the Girls' 2018-19 District 3C All-Conference list which was released on Monday, March 11.

The North Country Lady Mavericks landed three athletes on the list including Kaitlyn McColly, Kia Wasson, and Jaycee Erickson. The Dodson Lady Coyotes also landed three athletes on the All-Conference list, which included Kailee Henry, Ella Messerly, and Christina Jaynes.

LADY MAVERICKS

Selected to the first team and Defensive Team, McColly led the Lady Mavericks in points with 14 points per game and in rebounds with a total of 157.

"Kaitlyn is such a good athlete, with speed, height, and strength," Lady Maverick Head Coach Amber Erickson said. "She did a great job this season on both ends of the floor."

McColly made both teams last season as a freshman, which is a testament to her consistency during her high school career.

"She has the ability to defend both guards and posts, rebounds very well and can get to the hole and score," Coach Erickson said. "I think towards the end of the season she started to look more for her outside shots and pull up jumpers which makes her tough to defend."

Wasson was second in scoring with an average of 12.8 points per game and in rebounding with a total of 135 rebounds per game.

Wasson also proved to be a threat outside of the perimeter, knocking down 30 percent of her three-point attempts. Wasson was 40-of-132 from the three-point line. Wasson also led in free throw shooting making 64-of-113 (65.4 %) attempts. The only Lady Mav that had a better free throw percentage was Jaydyn Erickson, who made all five of her attempts.

"Kia hit a lot of big shots for us this season," Coach Erickson said. "She is a great 3pt shooter and gets up and down the floor in transition. She really started becoming a force on the boards throughout the season and her 1-on-1 defense improved greatly this year."

Jaycee Erickson had the team lead in assists with a total of 64. She was also third in rebounding with a total of 99 and third in scoring with 7.4 points per game.

"Jaycee did a great job coming in and starting as a freshman point guard," Coach Erickson said. "She is very strong and physical player. As she became more comfortable throughout the season she started to relax and look more for her shots and opportunities to score."

Coach Erickson spoke of the growth that she saw from her three All-Conference athletes.

"All three of these girls bring a lot of GRIT, hustle, and heart to the floor," Coach Erickson said. "They work hard every day in practice and in games. We are looking forward to some great seasons moving forward."

LADY COYOTES

Kailee Henry was chosen as the second pick in the ten athlete All-Conference list. The junior guard led Dodson in assists.

"Kailee is a phenomenal ball handler who has the ability to see the floor and create options offensively against any defense," said Dodson Head Coach Deserae Kill Eagle. "She works to perfect her craft daily and is also an excellent shooter."

Coach Kill Eagle went on to say that Henry was one of the team's top scorers despite being double-teamed against many of the team's opponents.

"Throughout the season Kailee had reclaimed her love of the game and worked to help her teammates grow," Coach Kill Eagle said.

Isabella Messerly, a sophomore, proved to be quite the sharpshooter from beyond the arc, but Coach Kill Eagle reiterated that the trey wasn't the only highlight of Messerly's play this season.

"She is also one of the strongest players at driving to the basket," Coach Kill Eagle said. "For being a smaller girl, she is sure mighty and hard to stop once she enters that key. She had the highest shooting percentage for our team this year.

Coach Kill Eagle also noted that Messerly was the youngest athlete to make the list.

Known as a strong rebounder, junior Christina Jaynes lived up to that billing this season leading Dodson in rebounds for the third straight season. Jaynes also shined in takeaways.

"Christina is one of the hardest working and most dedicated players a coach could ask for," Coach Kill Eagle said. "Christina led our team with rebounds and was one of the top leaders for steals this year as well. She is a team player and gets out there every night to get done what needs to be done and leaves it all on the floor."
