3C squads compete in Malta

The Dodson, Saco, and Whitewater track teams were present at the Malta Athletic Track Meet on Tuesday, April 23, at Mustang Field in Malta.

The Whitewater Lady Penguins placed the highest among the District 3C teams taking fourth place with a total of 46 points in the womens’ meet. The Lady Panthers took ninth with a total of 21, and Dodson took eleventh with 16 points.

In the mens’ meet Saco and Dodson tied for tenth place with Hobson. All three teams scored 14 points. Whitewater tied with Winnett-Grass Range for sixteenth with two points.

Lady Penguin Kelsee Cummings won shot put with a throw of 35-0.50. Dodson’s Christina Jaynes was second in the event with a throw of 34-09. Jaynes also took second in discus with a throw of 102-05.

Lady Penguin Hannah Hanley placed in all four of the events she competed in. She took second in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 18.34, third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 55.94, third in the 200 with a posted time of 31.14, and fifth in the 100 after posting a time of 14.74.

“I thought it went pretty good today, and I got a PR on a dirt track,” Hanley said of her effort in the 100 hurdle event. “It’s the same type of track that we have, so I am more familiar with it.”

Hanley shared the difference between junior high and high school meets in her opinion.

“There are more meets and harder competition,” Hanley said.

Despite only having four ladies the Lady Penguins have been in the mix at several meets this season.

“It’s pretty impressive that we only have five people and we can do really well individually,” Hanley said, including their lone boy Beau Simonson. “As a team, the points come together.”

Lady Penguin Kia Wasson placed in both of her events, taking second place in the 800 with a time of 2:45.7 and third in the 1600 with a season’s best of 6:02.

Lady Panther Jaycee placed in three of her four events, taking second in pole vault after clearing 8-6, third in javelin with a personal best of 101-09, and fourth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.88.

3C BOYS

Dodson’s Michael Jaynes, a freshman, took second place in triple jump with a mark at 39-04 and third in long jump with a leap of 18-6.

Saco junior Ty Murphy took second place in pole vault by clearing 11-0. Teammate Josh Salveson took third in pole vault by clearing a season’s best of 10-0. He is aiming to eclipse his previous PR of 10-6. He shared what he loves so much about pole vault.

“The free fall in the end is my favorite part,” Salveson said of pole vaulting. “The feeling of lightness. I need to keep my speed and go faster in the run-up and pull through.”

Whitewater sophomore Beau Simonson took fifth in discus with a personal best of 113-07.50.

Murphy took eighth place in the 100 with a personal best of 13.44. Dodson’s Jeramiah Benson posted a time of 13.86, Salveson had a time of 14.06 and Saco’s Chayton Pippen had a time of 14.49.

Salveson and Pippin were close in the 200 with Pippen crossing the line at 30.42 and Salveson crossing the line at 30.76.

Benson posted a time of 1:02.05 in the 400.
