3C teams at top ten and more

Coyotes, Panthers, Penguins head to Wolf Point

The Phillips County 3C high school teams saw plenty of action last week and will be headed to Wolf Point this weekend for the district tournament.

Saco, Dodson, and Whitewater each had representatives in the North-East Top Ten Meet in Glasgow on Tuesday, April 30. After the Top Ten event, Dodson and Saco headed to the Gene Nelson Memorial meet in Wolf Point on Friday, May 3 and then the Jean Dreikosen Memorial Meet on Saturday, May 4, in Glasgow.

At the North-East Top Ten meet, Whitewater's Kelsee Cummings, a sophomore, placed the highest among Phillips County 3C athletes, taking second place in shot put with a personal best of 35-7, a mark that also qualified her for state.

"Kelsee had a great Top Ten meet on her second throw of the competition she threw a 35-7 and the qualifying mark for class C is 35-5," Coach Charlene Wasson said. "She was pumped and so was I. She has been very consistent at the last five meets throwing 34-11 and 35-0."

Dodson junior Christina Jaynes took fourth in shot put with a throw of 34-01.50. Jaynes also took seventh in discus with a mark at 99-08.

Lady Penguin freshman Hannah Hanley placed in two of her three events, taking sixth the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.96 and sixth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 52.59. Hanley took eighth in the 100 posting a new personal best of 13.63.

"She broke her record in the 100 meter dash which was 13.65," Penguin Head Coach Charlene Wasson said. "She went in tenth in the competition and walked away with 8th. In the 100 meter hurdles she wasn't very far off her PR and she really ran a great race. She was sixth out of the ten competitors. The last race of the day for her was the 300 meter hurdles and even though it wasn't a PR she ran hard for sixth. Overall it was a great meet."

Saco's Jaycee Erickson took eighth place in pole vault by clearing 8-0.

Whitewater's Kia Wasson has been unable to perform at meets due to a muscle strain, but according to Coach Wasson, Kia has been able to workout and has been on the mend.

"We have five days of practice this week and will be heading to Wolf Point on Saturday for Districts," Coach Wasson said. "Everyone is feeling great. We are excited to be hitting the post season and looking forward to competing."

For the boys, Dodson's freshman Michael Jaynes placed the highest, taking fourth place in triple jump by clearing 39-04.50. Jaynes also took fifth place in long jump with a leap of 17-10.

Saco's Ty Murphy took ninth place in pole vault by clearing 10-6.

Saco would go on to two more meets, and Saco Coach Barry Malone is pleased with his team's development over the past week.

"We struggled a bit, especially in pole vault, a couple of weeks ago," Coach Malone said. "But, I think we got back on track this last week. Ty is returning to form. He took first in the Wolf Point meet, vaulting 12' 6", and winning the vault in the Hinsdale meet, vaulting 11' 6" in colder conditions."

He also mentioned the team's lone Lady Panther.

"Jaycee placed in all of her events in the Wolf Point meet," Coach Malone said. "She also has been struggling in the vault, but looks to getting things on track this week."
