Marks, Waters head to State

A pair of Malta golfers have punched their tickets to the 2019 State B Golf Meet in Missoula from Monday, May 13 through Wednesday, May 15.

M-ette Kloie Marks and Mustang Grayson Waters took care of business at the 2019 Class B Division I Meet in Wolf Point last week, both placing in the event.

Marks shot a team-best 92 strokes, placing sixth amongst the girls' golfers.

“My front nine was alright,” Marks said. “It was in the high forties and it was pretty good. Then I did better with my short game and took my time during my putting in the back nine and ended up golfing a 43, so that was probably the best part for me.”

The outing to Missoula will be Marks’ second trip to state. Having participated individually in 2017 in Shelby.

“I’m pretty excited,” Marks said. “I really wanted to make it this year and it was really nice having the satisfaction of doing so.”

Waters placed eleventh among the boys' golfers with a score of 94. His first hole was also his worst hole.

“Right off the bat, I was doing terrible,” Waters said. “I got a triple-bogey to start off with. I got a nine on my first hole, but after that, I stayed confident and bogey golfed the rest of the way.”

Waters went on to say that he made the most adjustments to his short game.

“I was a little aggressive with my chipping game and I just played a little easier, was less aggressive and it took off six strokes for me,” Waters said.

He has made the state tournament in three of his four years of golf.

“I’m just hoping to have some fun,” Waters said. “Get out of school for three days and it’s a good time.”

Neither athlete has been to the Canyon River Golf Course, so the duo had made plans to search for videos of the course to plan their attack. Prior to state, both athletes had a chance to practice at the course on Monday, May 13.

This year’s Northern B featured an extra day so the athletes were able to have a practice round at the Airport Golf Course on Monday, May 6.

Malta’s Miles Bunk was only a few strokes from placing at the meet, posting a score of 98. The lowest qualifying score was 96 which was posted by Fairfield’s Derek Simmons and Choteau’s Henry Bieler.

Mustang Hayden VanWichen posted a total of 107 strokes, and Ezra Judd had a score of 110.

Jarek Shepard of Conrad won the boys’ meet with a score of 77. Fellow Conrad golfer Blake Vandenacre took second with a score of 78. Shelby’s Wyatt Brusven took third with 83 strokes.

M-ette Reba Doucette had 109 strokes, Camryn Messerly had 118, Tamela Abrahamson had 137, and Jordan Markuson had 143.

Skyler Martin of Shelby won the girls’ meet with 80 strokes. Shelby’s Kendall Anderson was second with 88. Fairfield’s Emma Woods was third with 88. Shelby’s Reese Whitted was fourth with 88, and Conrad’s Kate Murack was fifth with 91.
