M-ettes take silver in Glasgow

The Malta M-ettes are headed to the 2019 State A-B Track Meet in Kalispell on Thursday, May 23, through Saturday, May 25.

The team took second place in the 2019 Northern B Divisional meet in Glasgow last Saturday, May 18, at Scottie Field.

The Glasgow Lady Scotties won the event with a total of 132 points. Malta was second with 83.5 points, Wolf Point took third with 69, Fairfield was fourth with 63, and Cut Bank tied with Harlem for fifth with 36.

The M-ettes were led by freshman Justine Lamb who won the 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdle events with personal bests in each race.

"The key was to keep pushing, attack each hurdle, keep running, and jump over them," Lamb said.

She had a time of 16.45 in the 100 meter hurdles and a time of 49.81 in the 300 hurdles. Lamb took second place in high jump with a personal best of 4-10.

Lamb plans on coming into the state meet completely ready for whatever the meet brings.

"Practice hard over the week, stay focused, and get myself motivated for state," Lamb said.

Sophomore Erica Smith took first place in the long jump and triple jump events with marks of 15-09.50 and 33-02.25 respectively. Smith also took sixth in high jump by clearing 4-04.

Senior Kyleigh Schipman won javelin with a throw of 112-04 in the finals. She threw a 103 in prelims, which led the group. She was asked about her first three throws.

"I wish I could go farther because I had a pretty good week of practice with throwing farther than that," Schipman said.

Junior Carly Garfield took second place in shot put with a throw of 32-04. Garfield also took sixth place in discus with a throw of 95-06.

Senior Wylee Young took fourth place in high jump by clearing 4-08.

Freshman Skylie Lefdahl set a personal best of 104-08 in discus, which earned her a fourth place finish.

The short relay team consisting of Leslie Young, Smith, Kaylee Bishop and W. Young qualified for state, taking fifth with a time of 54.62.

Though Kayla Judd did not qualify for state in her hurdle events, Judd won her heat in the 300 and was ecstatic. She had beaten her previous bests in both events posting a time of 18.75 in the 100 hurdles and winning her heat of the 300 hurdles with a time of 53.52.

"I was able to get my trail leg over a lot faster than I usually do," Judd said. "I thought maybe I could go faster but it was my best time this year."
