PCMS set to kick off 13th season

The Phillips County Motorsports group is officially ready to kick off their 2019 racing season on Saturday, June 1, at the Hi-Line Drag Strip located south of Malta.

The first racing event of the season is set to start at the conclusion of the 2019 First State Bank Car Show that will be held on First Street.

The PCMS event typically kicks off their season with exciting acts from all around the motorsports spectrum.

“This year we will have the Chuck Haynes Jet Dragster,” PCMS President Dan Stout said.

Stout believes that Haynes will make a pass at the conclusion of the test and tune runs after the car show. And later (close to 8 p.m.) as the sun goes down, Haynes will make another pass giving citizens from Phillips and surrounding counties a chance to see his jet car during a darker setting. Stout went on to say that it will be early enough to not upset neighboring homes. The rule for the track is not to run between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. because the track is so close to town.

“Anyone who has never seen it should come down to see it because it is really spectacular,” Stout said. “The noise and the flames of a jet car going down the track is pretty cool.”

Haynes will also make a pass on Sunday morning.

Stout went on to say that the event will also feature the Northwest Nostalgia Tour, a group of classic dragsters.

“They are old-style front engine dragster type cars,” Stout said. “They are going to make exhibition runs on Sunday.”

The race season will consist of the same four groupings of racers they host yearly including a Junior Dragster Class, Sportsman Class, No Box Class, and Box Super Class.

The Junior Dragster class includes racers from the ages of 8 to 18. The Sportsman class features racers 16 and over with street legal cars that include a few other requirements. The No Box class features quicker cars with no electronic timing devices, and the Super Pro features cars with electronics that help reaction times at the starting line.
