One Nation, Under God
A 1950 Dodge Power Wagon rumbled down Malta's S 1st Street East, into the 17th Annual Malta's First State Bank Car Show, and stole the hearts and imaginations of the crowd on hand for the event last Saturday.
Scott Dobson is a Malta High School graduate of the Class of 1991 and currently lives in Dallas, Texas, where he is a petroleum engineer. About six years ago, after the passing of some family members who used to run Dobson Motors in Malta, Scott was lucky enough to obtain the old, green, Power Wagon, originally owned by his grandfather, Pete Dobson (who was also the Mayor of Malta from 1953 to 1960) ... though the vehicle had seen better days. Dobson's father, Dan Dobson, asked his son if he wanted to rebuild the Power Wagon and return it to its former glory...Scott was obliged.
"It has been here in Malta since 1950," Scott said. "They used it to haul hay and lumber and it had a plow on the front of it to plow snow."
Scott's stepfather, John Wilke, who retired from ranching a few years ago, was looking for things to do in his new free time. Scott said John had time and he would like to take on the challenge of restoring the old Power Wagon.
"We changed out the axles and the engines," Scott said. "They used to get up to about 45 (miles per hour) and they would be wound up pretty good. I bet you could get it up to 70-plus now if you really wanted to."
Polished to perfection and sitting pretty at the car show, the old Dobson Power Wagon won three awards; Top Six Judges, the Darryl Seeley Memorial Award for best truck or tractor, and the People's Choice Award. (When Dobson was named as the People's Choice, the crowd erupted in applause.)
Scott said the Power Wagon will remain in the family forever and will be passed down to his son, Colter, in a few years...he's two now.
"Maybe he can start driving at seven," Scott kidded.
Malta First State Bank Car Show coordinator Terry Skones reported that there was a total of 96 vehicles entered into this year's event (up two from last year) and was once again happy with the outcome.
"The weather was wonderful, we had lots of people come and enter and even more came down to just have a look," Skones said.
The winner of the Judged Top 6 at this year's Car Show was Amelia Miller, Chinook, Mont., and her 1954 GMC; Bill and Natalie Parker, Lame Deer, Mont., and their 1933 American Austin Roadster; Smiley Johnson, Glasgow, Mont., and his 1957 Chevy convertible and trailer; Noel Ehret, Malta, and his 1957 Ford; Scott Dobson, Dallas, Texas, and his 1950 Dodge Power Wagon, and Jerry Biese, Swift Current, Sask., Canada, and his 1957 Chevy Bel Air.
The Darryl Seeley Memorial Award for best truck or tractor was awarded to Scott Dobson, Dallas, Texas, and his 1950 Dodge Power Wagon. The Longest Distance to the Car Show was awarded to Joe Giesbrecht, Saskatoon, Canada; Best Motorcycle was awarded to Scott Wyse and his granddaughter, Jada, of Dodson, and the award for Best Tractor was awarded to Malta's RC Skiff and his 1952 Massey Ferguson tractor.
