Malta 12U Softball

The Trafton Park Softball/Baseball field hosted a new event last Tuesday, June 18, as the Malta 12U girls became the first youth softball team to play at Trafton in recent history.

“We started traveling this year because we are just one team; having just enough girls for 12 and under,” Malta Coach Dean Yeadon told the PCN. “It was great and the Malta Parks and Rec Department did a great job on that field.”

After finding that they had enough girls to field a team Yeadon reached out to Glasgow’s team and the teams agreed to play two double-headers, one in Glasgow on Tuesday, June 11, and another in Malta last Tuesday, June 18.

The games were six innings or up to an hour-and-a-half time length. Each inning had a five run cap for the teams. Malta lost both games at Trafton by scores of 16-14 and 14-12.

Because Glasgow was nearing the end of their season, the teams agreed to two games.

“We got a late start on this season and hopefully next year we can have a board developed and put all of our entities together … and just try to make it a legitimate league,” Yeadon said.

Yeadon hopes to combine the efforts of various baseball and softball groups around the area to become the aforementioned league in future years.

Though he admits that he wanted to start a girls’ softball team for his daughter’s sake, he knows that the young team is capable of doing great things in the sport.

“We have a lot of good athletes here and it’s about giving kids an opportunity to play something different and outside of the norm,” Yeadon said.
