4-H Champs Crowned

It was a rough day of showmanship for the senior class of the 2019 4-H Beef Show at the P.C. Fair on Friday, August 2.

The first heat of the showmanship went as smooth as can be, with 4-H Judge Collin Gibbs selecting eventual Grand Champion Kendall Moore and third place finisher Pierce Mortenson to come back for the championship round.

The second group faced challenges and a little bad luck as a few of the steers didn't cooperate with the temperatures quickly rising at the Dodson fairgrounds. Despite the group's misfortunes, Judge Gibbs brought back eventual Reserve Champion Kailey Crowder and Kooper Oxarart.

Carson Ottinger was named Grand Champion in the Advance Junior Class, a group that was praised for their attention to detail this year. Hoyt Hellie was named Reserve Champion, while his brother Haden Hellie took third place.

In Market, Tova Anderson and her steer Arlo won Grand Champion, while Elly Anderson was named Reserve Champion.

The PCN caught up with Moore, who was standing with his Charolais-Hereford steer named Murphy, after Moore's showmanship win. As it turns out Moore learned from last year's third place finish.

"Last year I remembered that I didn't keep my steer's head up and that's what I remembered for today," Moore said. "So I tried to keep his head up and it caught the judge's eye."

He shared what it meant to win Grand Champion in the Beef Showman category

"It feels pretty good and I was proud of myself and my parents were as well," Moore said.

Junior Grand Champion Carson Ottinger was able to go Round Robin for a second consecutive year.

"It feels good," Ottinger said. "It's two years in a row for Round Robin and I am excited."

Ottinger had won Market Pig and Pig Showmanship last year. He shared the key to his success in this year's Junior Beef Showmanship.

"It was about keeping him calm and not letting him run away," Ottinger said.

The PCN also talked to Tova Anderson, whose steer named Arlo was selected as Grand Champion during the Market Beef Showing.

"It feels really good," Anderson said. "It represents our ranch, the cattle that we raise, and our family."

She shared why she thought Arlo stood out above the rest.

"He is really deep and he is good looking," Anderson said. "He has a really big butt and that's what the people like."

Sandra Jones was named Grand Champion in Dairy Showmanship and Breeding Beef.
