One Nation, Under God

Fisher takes helm as Malta High School Principal

With the start of a new year, Malta High School welcomed a new principal in Tracy Fisher, who moved from Wibaux under the same title at Wibaux High School.

"Things have been going pretty good here," Fisher said of his first days at Malta High. "The kids are great. The people in Malta, the teachers, and the students have been polite, and I appreciate that. It's easy to feel welcomed."

Principal Fisher is a 1982 graduate of Lyons High School in his hometown of Lyons, Kan. He then went to Fort Hays State University where he received his Bachelors in Elementary Education in 1986. He then attended Western Governors University and received a Masters in Educational Leadership in 2016. He started teaching fifth grade in Weslaco, Texas, from 1987-89 and then first grade in Raymondville, Texas. Principal Fisher also earned a Masters Degree in Religious Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas in 1994. He would then take a job as a Children's Minister in McAllen Texas.

He would return to teaching in public schools in 2003, taking a job as a 3rd-4th grade teacher in Froid. He taught 7th and 8th grade at Wibaux Public Schools for 12 years and went on to earn his Masters in Educational Leadership. He was Wibaux's High School Principal from 2016-2019.

"When I started teaching in Wibaux, the superintendent encouraged me to go get an Educational Leadership degree and I said no," Principal Fisher recalled, stating he wanted to focus on the educational aspect of teaching. "I thought about it for two years and people continued telling me that I would be a great principal and so I finally took a leap."

Though it took him years to respond to those who saw his potential as an administrator, Principal Fisher grew to love the idea and eventually the job of being a principal.

"What I love is that I am not stuck in a classroom," he said. "I'm out there communicating with all of the teachers and all of the students. It seems crazy, but I love doing the scheduling. I gotta have the challenge."

In addition to teaching and being the principal, Principal Fisher had also driven buses as a substitute, kept scores at volleyball and basketball games. He was the Driver's Education instructor. And he was also in an internship for superintendent at Wibaux Schools last year.

He felt overwhelmed by his various responsibilities in Wibaux but knew he wanted to remain in administration. He was offered a job as a superintendent at Lambert Schools, but he declined and instead applied for the principal job at Malta.

His first day at Malta High was August 5. He shared his impressions of the town.

"It's bigger than Wibaux and there is a nice grocery store here," he said. "It's also nice to have places to eat here I saw the Dairy Queen when we visited here and I thought we can't move here because my weakness is chocolate malts from Dairy Queen."

His wife Raquel Fisher is the new Spanish teacher at Malta High School. The couple has two sons; 25-year-old Preston who serves in the National Guard near Seattle and 22-year-old Blake who is studying Cyber Security south of Seattle.
