2019 Malta Mustangs Football

Team welcomes familiar face at Head Coach

With the departure of former Mustangs Head Coach Jim Benn, the 2019 Malta Mustangs Football team welcomes back a familiar face in newly rehired Head Coach Nick Oxarart, who was hired a little over a month ago.

Though Oxarart has been with the Mustangs as an assistant coach in 2018, he has coached the Mustangs to the playoffs in 2016 and 2015 as a head coach before stepping down in 2017.

In all Oxarart has been a Mustang football coach for 13 of the last 14 seasons.

"It's a big job to take on again but I am happy to do it," Coach Oxarart said. "The kids are awesome and that's what keeps me coming back. It's good to be back to run things."

Coach Oxarart showed respect for Coach Benn's offense.

"Jim left us with his stamp on the offense, so we are using some of the stuff that he did and we appreciate the time and effort that he put into the program," Coach Oxarart said. "We will keep things pretty similar to things that he did... which will be easier for the kids."

As far as the team goes, Malta has retained a lot of talent despite losing seniors Andres Lopez, Kevin Henry, Payton Clausen, Kolter Schipman, Miles Bunk to graduation and junior Cormac Benn to transfer. Despite the losses to the roster, Coach Oxarart is encouraged.

"We have a handful of starters coming back who had some experience last year," Coach Oxarart said.

The team welcomes back senior Franky Werk who earned first-team honors as an offensive lineman. Werk will be protecting junior quarterback Kooper Oxarart, who had All-conference honors on the other side of the ball as a defensive back. K. Oxarart led Malta with five interceptions last season.

The team also welcomes back senior Callan Mears who earned an All-Conference nod at linebacker. Mears will also see time at tight end this season. Also earning All-Conference honors last year was junior Pierce Mortenson who will also be returning at defensive end.

Senior Tanner Smith who played receiver and running back last season will likely see plenty of time in the backfield. Beau Simonson will be returning as a left tackle this season and will play defensive tackle. Jeramiah Benson also returns at corner and wide receiver.
