North Country defeats Harlem, Culbertson
The North Country Mavericks Volleyball team won a pair of games last week, defeating Harlem and Culbertson, giving the team a record of 6-3 so far this season.
“We are halfway done with the season and we are heading in the right direction,” Mavericks Coach Charlene Wasson said. “We have a tough second-half schedule that will really tell us where we sit in the district so that is good.”
The Mavericks defeated the Harlem Wildcats 3-1 in Harlem on Tuesday, September 24. The team then went to Hinsdale on Saturday, September 28, and defeated the Culbertson Cowgirls.
“We were scrappy this week and determined not to lose,” Coach Wasson said. “We didn't win very pretty on Saturday but we did get a win and keeps us in the middle of the pack district wise.”
In their home win over Culbertson, the Mavericks won 3-2, the scores were 26-24 (NC), 25-21 (CUL), 25-20 (CUL), 25-19 (NC), and 15-13 (NC).
Facing the possibility of defeat in set four, the team huddled and focused on one of the most important aspects of the game.
“We just really talked about communicating and talking to make the flow of the game better in set 4 and 5 which seemed to improve,” Coach Wasson said. “Funny how little things like communication end up being one of the big reasons you win or lose matches or any team sport. And who would think you would have to tell girls to talk.”
Jaydyn Erickson led the Mavericks with 18 kills. Kaitlyn McColly had 11 kills and Kia Wasson had nine kills.
Jaycee Erickson had a team-leading 17 assists and Danika Soper added 14. McColly had 10 digs, Soper and Wasson had nine each. Mattea McColly had three blocks and Soper had six aces.
The night also served as Senior Night for Hinsdale High School seniors Elise Strommen and Halle Beil.
“Being senior night on Saturday kinda made us play on a high the first match then we went into a lull the second two,” Coach Wasson said. “I'm just proud of the team this week for battling through things and coming out on the top side of that. Our word of the week last week was battle and this week it is poise. Seems like each week the word has defined how we approach the match.”
In their 3-1 win over Harlem, the scores were 25-22, 25-21, 21-25 (Harlem), and 25-21.
K.. Wasson led the Mavericks with 10 kills. Jaycee Erickson had 14 assists. Strommen had 27 digs. Jaydyn Erickson had five blocks and Soper had five aces.
The Mavericks made a few adjustments last week and though they won their games last week, it has tested the team.
“I moved Elise from playing all the way around to being our Libero and playing the back row for our middle hitters Jaydyn and Mattea,” Coach Wasson said. “I moved Kaitlyn from a middle hitter to being an outside hitter. We are getting used to these changes but for the most part it wasn't a huge change.”
The Mavericks are scheduled to face Richey-Lambert in Richey on Friday, October 4, with games starting at 4 p.m. The team will them go to the Plentywood Invitational on Saturday, October 5. The first Maverick game is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. They will have games every 30 minutes, with the last starting at 12:30 p.m.
