MHS 2019-2020 Homecoming

The 2019 Malta High School Homecoming Pep Rally was an event that featured plenty of laughter, fun, and competitive excitement at the Malta High School Gymnasium on Friday, October 4.

Macy Williamson, a senior, was chosen as the homecoming queen, while Keith Epperson, also a senior, was chosen as homecoming king.

The homecoming court consisted of Epperson, Franky Werk, Callan Mears, and Tanner Smith as the candidates for king and Williamson, Kelbee Denham, Carly Garfield, and Kaycee Bond as candidates for queen.

The event featured class races, pig and goat kisses, and plenty of cheer as the Malta Middle School and Malta Elementary School students joined the Malta High School students for the fun and festivities. Following the Pep Rally, the 2019 Homecoming Parade took place, going around the town of Malta around 2 p.m. that day.

"I think it's awesome," Malta High School Principal Tracy Fisher said of his first MHS Homecoming Pep Rally. "There is a lot of team spirit and I just like seeing everybody excited today."

Malta High School's Travis Somerfeld was one of the event's Emcees, who was joined in leading the event with Malta High School's Sidney Meeks, Erica Smith, Tyler Arnold, and Jillian O'Brien.

The event also featured speeches from Mustang Football Coach Nick Oxarart, Malta M-ette Cross Country Coach Thea Solberg, and Malta Volleyball Coach Tasha Hines.

The freshman class won the class races, an event in which two students from each class were tasked with dressing a Malta Elementary School student in Malta sports gear that included a football helmet pads and pants. After dressing the student, one Malta High student would have to lay down on a rolling body board with the elementary student on top, an experience that proved painful to watch as the junior class fell over and over again.

The sophomore class won the donut eating competition, an event in which a student from each class was paired with a teacher. The duos took turns eating donuts off of a string without the use of hands.

The event also had a yearbook ceremony in which four retired teachers were presented with year books. Those honored were former FFA teach Grant Messerly, former FCS teacher Becky Bruce, former history and PE teacher Delmar Henry, and former Principal and Athletic Director Scott King.

After the presentation of yearbooks and a passionately sung rendition of Blue and White (MHS Fight Song), things took a different turn, as the top three fundraising teachers at Malta Public Schools were encouraged to kiss a pig and goat.

The top raising teacher was Mr. Robert Twiggs, who was the only teacher to kiss Puah, a black pig, who could be heard squealing loudly after he was let out of his kennel. Second went to Mr. Travis Somerfeld, who appeared concerned that he might get rammed by the goat that he kissed. Third place went to Mr. Zack Handley, who was the only teacher to successfully land a kiss on the lips of the goat.
