Mavs struggle in Froid

The 7-5 North Country Mavericks may have a winning record, but the team showed that they have plenty of work to do after falling to the Froid-Lake Redhawks in Froid on Thursday, October 10.

The scores of the game were 22-25 (FL), 24-26 (FL), 25-14 (NC), and 21-25 (FL).

The Mavericks were led by Kaitlyn McColly who had 16 kills, 13 digs, and one block. Kia Wasson had 12 kills, 12 digs, and three aces. Mattea McColly led in blocks registering two of the team's three blocks. Danika Soper had 15 assists. Jaycee Erickson had twelve assists.

"We were up on the Redhawks six points in the first two sets, but couldn't capitalize on a win because of our unforced errors," Mavericks Head Coach Charlene Wasson said. "It seems when we got down we got down and stayed there for too long, then couldn't gain any momentum back."

Coach Wasson explained how set three was a different story and the Mavericks were able to easily win the set before things fell apart in the fourth set. Ultimately unforced errors proved to be a problem for the Mavericks.

"We have been our biggest enemy when it comes to playing good solid teams," Coach Wasson said. "We need to find what we are good at and stick to it in games like this. We served good 90% as a team right where I set a goal for us this season. Our free ball passing was a bit off it and it really only left us with one attack option because the passes to the setter were coming right where our Middle attacker needs to approach that made us easier to defend."

With the season coming close to an end, Coach Wasson knows that improvement is a must, given where the team currently sits in the district.

"We are going to work hard at having more options on offensive attacks this week and through the end of the season," Coach Wasson said. "We are sitting eighth in a twelve-team district right now this week going into our game against Nashua-Opheim. Five teams will advance on to the Divisional Tournament in Sidney from our district. I would like to think we are right up in that group of five but we have to find ways to finish sets and matches before that will get accomplished."

The team's game against Nashua-Opheim was scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in Nashua on Tuesday, October 15. The Maverick's next game is scheduled for Thursday, October 24, against the Harlem Wildcats in Whitewater.
