Maverick teams pummel Porkies

Thursday, January 3, proved to be a dominant night for the North Country varsity teams in Nashua, as the Mavericks boys downed their counterparts 60-48 and the Lady Mavericks defeated the Lady Porcupines 59-18.

Lady Mavericks Head Coach Amber Erickson shared what went so well for the Lady Mavericks that night.

“I thought we looked very sharp for our first game back from the break,” Coach Erickson said. “Our communication was pretty good which is something we have been working on and talk a lot about.”

The Lady Mavericks did not allow the Porcupines to score ten points in any given quarter, outscoring the Porkies 21-2 in the first quarter, 17-6 in the second quarter, 19-2 and in the third quarter.

“Our pressure on defense really helped create offensive scoring for us,” Coach Erickson said. “We forced Nashua into 29 turnovers and they really didn't get any easy looks at the basket. We are learning to play very uptempo but smart and recognizing when to take the easy quick shot and when to run the offense. We only had 5 turnovers against Nashua.”

The North Country reserves struggled in the fourth netting only two points and giving up eight.

The Lady Mavericks were led by Kaitlyn McColly who scored 14 points. Kia Wasson and Jaycee Erickson each scored 12 points. Jaydyn Erickson scored six points, Danika Soper had four points, Kelsee Cummings had four points, Mattea McColly had two points, and Zandora Longtree had one point.

Kia Wasson had an astounding nine steals, six assists, and five rebounds. K. McColly had six rebounds and three steals. J. Erickson had six assists and four steals.

The Maverick boys also jumped on Nashua early, outscoring the Porkies 23-2 in the first quarter, a quarter in which Jon Rey Taylor scored eight of his ten points.

The Mavericks were led by Loden Idler who had 18 points. Beau Simonson scored 16 points, eight of which came in the third quarter.

Nashua’s defense tightened up in the second quarter, slowing down the Mavericks to an output of 10 points. The Porcupines would add 14 to their total by halftime. Nashua outscored North Country 32-27 in the second half.

This week, the Mavericks and Lady Mavericks will see action in Scobey on Friday, January 10, as they take on the Spartans and Lady Spartans. The Girls JV game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. The Boys JV game starts at 4:30 p.m. The Girls Varsity game starts at 6 p.m. and the Boys Varsity game starts at 7:30.

The team will then head to Whitewater for a game against the Dodson basketball teams on Saturday, January 11. The games against Dodson start at 3:30 p.m. with the Girls JV game. The Boys JV game is at 4:30 p.m. The Girls Varsity game is at 6 p.m. and the Boys Varsity game is at 7:30 p.m.

“This will be a good weekend of games for us to see how far we have come from a season ago,” Coach Erickson said. “Scobey has had the upper hand on us these last few years and a team we will have to play very well against to beat and Dodson is probably right in the mix for being that 3rd team fighting for a spot to get to Divisionals. With that being said, the girls have been focused, working hard and are excited and ready for this weekends’ games.”
