100 years ago

January 21, 1920

Fire of undetermined origin did considerable damage to the interior of the Arcade Meat Market and the adjoining Lee Hardware store on Fifth Avenue.

Ole Jensen, a Dodson farmer, was killed when the car he was driving overturned on the road between Savoy and Coburg.

Schuyler Leedy reported four inches of snow on the Missouri River and said ranchers were busy with feeding operations.

Carl Veseth, who was attending school at Miles City, had been at home visiting his parents.

Passenger Train No. 2 was wrecked at Wagner by a faulty switch. No one was injured but several cars went off the tracks.

Charles V. Neilson was a candidate for the office of clerk of court on the republican ticket.

Tom Johnson was seeking reelection as sheriff on the democratic ticket.

The dispute between Canada and the United States over the waters of the St. Mary and Milk River was at an acute stage.

75 years ago

January 25, 1945

Elevator Manager is brought to hospital

Goerge Aikins, manager of the Whitewater elevator, was brought to the Survant Hospital the latter part of last week suffering from exhaustion following a fire which threatened the elevator building for several hours.

Combustible material in the cupola of the elevator was set on fire from friction from a defective pulley and shaft. Residents of Whitewater battled the blaze for several hours before it was brought entirely under control. Dan Depuydt and Mr. Aikins suffered from exhaustion and the effects of smoke and gas.

Marriage of Malta girl announced by parents

Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Henry of Malta have announced the marriage of their daughter, Muriel, to Earl Holman of Long Beach, Calif.

Miss Henry, who had been employed for more than a year, was married shortly before Christmas.

Three girls make University Honor Roll

Three young women from Phillips County, Jean C. Livdahl and Thelma N. Livdahl, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Livdahl of Malta, and Jane E. Solvie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Solvie, made the Autumn Quarter Honor Roll at Montana State University.

$30,000 blaze in Veseth Building

Damage estimated at between $30,000 and $35,000 was done to the Carl Veseth Building, the fixtures, and equipment of the Gamble Store, the Palace Theatre and apartments on the second floor of the building in a fire which broke out in the workshop of the Gamble Store Saturday evening.

The Malta Fire Department responded promptly to the alarm and was able to keep the building from being totally destroyed.

January 22, 1970

Bus breakdown Saturday night stalled students, players

Basketball players and a busload of Malta High School students were both victims of bus breakdowns on the trip home from Harlem on Saturday night.

Keith Holmes, owner of the bus, reports that both the electric fuel pumps went out on the Mustang bus. It stalled near the Wagner turnoff about nine miles west of Malta. Martin Neuhausen, MHP, came to the bus and towed it to the Kid Curry location when they came upon another busload of students which had also broken down. Some of the basketball players were transferred to the pep bus and passing cars and the patrol car towed the pep bus to town. Holmes reports that the rod went out in the pep bus engine.

Question: Do you think the minimum wage should be raised from $4.25 an hour to $5 per hour over a two-year period?

Leah Watson: Yes, Because the cost of living has gone up.

Tina Watson: Yes, to make it more affordable for people who don't make big bucks to get a start! People making minimum wage are usually the ones working their tales off.

Gary Schlieve: Yes, I think it's hard for families starting out to live on $4.25 an hour.

Clarence Beyer: Yes, I don't think people can live on $4.25 per hour.

Editor's Note: On January 1, 2020, the minimum wage in Montana was raised to $8.65 per hour, effecting an estimated 2.2-percent of the state's workforce, according to the Governor's Office.
