2020 PC Crop Seminar Feb. 26 at GN in Malta

The MSU Phillips County Extension Office will be hosting a Crop Seminar on Wednesday, February 26, at the Great Northern Hotel in Malta.

The meeting will start at 10 a.m. with the first speaker and conclude around 4 p.m. Lunch will be provided at noon. Participants will receive four recertification points for attending the entire Seminar. Call the Extension office at 654-2543 if you have questions.

The speakers will be:

10 a.m. - Uta McKelvy, Montana State University PhD candidate, Department of Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology. Fungicide efficacy and resistance prevention in cereal grains, peas, lentils and chickpeas. She will also address upcoming crop disease concerns for crops raised in Phillips County.

11 a.m. - Dr. Kent McVay, Extension cropping systems specialist at the Southern Agricultural Research Center nearly Huntley, MT will demonstrate how to access and use tools he has developed to help you with production decisions. Answers to many of your production questions are as close as your smartphone or laptop. With your input, results for MSU fertilizer recommendations, herbicide selection, and other management choices are quickly obtained. Winter and spring wheat variety field tests can easily be compared across locations and years that you choose to help you select an appropriate variety for your farm.

1 p.m. - Peggy Lamb, Agronomy Research Scientist from Northern Agricultural Research Center near Havre will be discussing the agronomics of canola production from seeding through harvest. She will touch on many topics including seedling establishment, variety trial information, herbicide use and carryover, scouting for insects and harvest strategies. Throughout her presentation she will include insight from previous question and answer sessions with canola producers from across Montana.

2 p.m. - Chris Herring, Columbia Grain Inc. Grain Basis and Market Outlook for Small Grains and Pulse Crops.

3 p.m. Marko Manoukian, MSU Extension Agent Phillips County. Pesticide safety equipment including fitting of personal respirator mask and personal protective equipment.
