70 students honored at MES Science Fair

A total of 70 students competed at the 2020 Malta Elementary School Science Fair, nearly double from last year's event, competing in the areas of Chemical, Physical, Life, and Earth and on Tuesday afternoon a ceremony was held where ribbons, trophies, and medals were awarded.

"Thank you for attending, supporting and encouraging the Malta Elementary School Science Fair, MES Principal Cadance Wipplinger said. "These students have put a lot of hard work into their projects and your support helps. We have a variety of projects this year as we do every year. The judges had many wonderful comments about the individuality and quality of this year's projects. They enjoyed listening to the student's presentations."

Rose Alexander, a sixth-grade student, participated in the 6th Grade Chemical category with her project entitled "Playing with Fire," and earned a blue ribbon, medal and trophy for her efforts.

"My question was, is it possible to hold a fireball for a few seconds without getting burned," Alexander said. "I found out it is possible to hold a fireball for a few seconds without getting burned ... I did enjoy this project. I didn't think it would go that well when it started."

Kayla Ottinger, a fourth grade student who recently took second place in the school's geography bee, earned first place honors – which included a blue ribbon, trophy, and medal - said she was pleased with how her afternoon played out.

"It feels, actually, pretty good because I haven't won in a long time," she said. "Last year around this time I won at the Science Fair, too."

Ottinger's project was entitled "What is the Pop Can Hiding" that focused on the plastic lining in aluminum soda cans and concluded that the lining is used so the beverage doesn't taste like the can.

"We even used Liquid Plumber in a can to see if it would eat the liner, and it didn't, but it did eat the aluminum," she said.
