Season ends for Mavericks

The season came to an end for the North Country Mavericks as the team fell to the Lustre Christian Lions 51-38 in overtime of the Consolation Finals of the 3C District Tournament.

Despite the team outscoring Lustre 22-14 in the second half, the Mavericks were outscored 18-0 in the overtime period, bringing their campaign to a bitter end. The Lions made all 16 free throw attempts in overtime, ten of which were scored by Kolden Hoversland.

The Mavericks were led by Loden Idler who scored 10 points. Brady Albus and Beau Simonson each scored seven points. Jon Rey Taylor had six points. Dustin Ostrom had two points and Jesse Lee had one point.

Prior to their loss to Lustre, the Mavericks overwhelmed the Frazer Bearcubs on Friday morning, pulling out a 54-25 win. The Mavericks outscored Frazer 14-2 in the first quarter, 16-7 in the second, and 13-5 in the third. Both teams added 11 to their total in the fourth.

The Mavs were led by Ostrom who had 14 points. Trey Johnson had 11 points. Randy Gairrett had nine points. Cordell Younkin had eight points, and Albus added six points.

In their semi-final loss to the Scobey Spartans on Thursday, February 20, the score was 54-38. The Spartans dominated the first half, outscoring the Mavericks 14-8 in the first quarter and then 18-6 in the second quarter. The score at halftime was 32-14.

The Mavericks outscored Scobey 20-15 in the third, but not in the fourth as the Spartans scored seven and the Mavericks could only score four.

The Mavs were led by Idler who had ten points. Simonson and Ostrom both scored nine points. Lee had six points.

North Country's first game of the 3C tourney was a win over 70-34 Nashua on Wednesday. The Mavs were led by Idler who scored 18 points, 10 of which were scored in the first quarter. Idler had four treys in the win. Lee had 11 points. Simonson had 10 points. Taylor had six points off of two treys.

The North Country defense held Nashua to three field goals and five made free throws in the first half for a total of 12 points. North Country's offense poured on 34 points during the first half.

The Maverick offense was even more dynamic in the third period, scoring 24 points, while Nashua only mustered nine. Nashua outscored North Country 13-12 in the fourth quarter.
