Teams head to Malta for Northern B

1B and 2B District Tournaments in review

The Malta High School Gymnasium will likely be at full capacity this week as Fairfield, Shelby, Rocky Boy, Cut Bank, Wolf Point, Harlem, Malta and Glasgow come to town to fight for a spot in the 2020 State B Tournament in Butte starting Thursday, March 12.

Only three of eight teams will move on to state.

The 1B District Tournament was played at Cut Bank High School from Thursday, February 20, through Saturday, February 22. The 2B District Tournament was played at Malta High School last Thursday to Saturday.

Fairfield (14-4) won the 1B District title last Saturday, February 22, by defeating the Shelby Coyotes 60-53. The Eagles were led by Keeley Blake who had 31 points. Daniel Faith was the closest scorer netting nine points.

Shelby was led by Rhett Reynolds who had 17 points and Trenton Emerson who had 10 points.

Fairfield also defeated Rocky Boy (9-6), who was the tournament's 3rd seed. During the Fairfield, Rocky Boy game, Blake had 32 points and Rocky Boy's Benji Crebs had 31 points.

Rocky Boy won the consolation finals by defeating Cut Bank (4-12). The score was 66-60. Cut Bank was up 50-45 in the third quarter of the game, but Rocky Boy outpaced Cut Bank in the fourth scoring 21 points and only gave up 10.

The Northern Stars were led by Blake Cantrell who had 22. Crebs had 17 points and Sean Gibson had 13 points.

The Wolves were led by Devin Gobert, who had 25 points. Hayden Harrell had 17 and Dayne Barbie had 11 points.

The Wolf Point Wolves (12-8) won the 2B District Title in Malta last Saturday, defeating the district's top seed Harlem (16-3). The score of the game was 68-58.

The Wolves outscored Harlem 34-21 in the first half, and despite a 24-16 third quarter comeback by Harlem, the Wolves held on to win. The Wolves were led by Lance St. Germaine, who had 20 points. Tade Wallet had 16 points.

Harlem was led by Brad Cichosz who had 17 points. RJ Ramone had 16 points and Daniel Lawrance had 11 points.

Malta and Glasgow clashed in the 2B Consolation Finals, and the hometeam Mustangs won 46-36.

The Mustangs were led by Tanner Smith who had 19 points. Ben Costin added 14 points.

Glasgow was led by Keigan Skolrud who had 13 points. Alec Boland had 10 points.

The 1B District's top seed Fairfield will open the Northern B Divisional Tournament against 2B's fourth ranked team Glasgow at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 27.

1B's third seeded team Rocky Boy will face 2B runner-up Harlem at 2:30 p.m. that same day. The District 2B Champion Wolf Point Wolves will see the Wolves of Cut Bank, who was the fourth place team in 1B, at 6:30 p.m. Malta, who is 2B's third seed will see 1B Runner-up Shelby on Thursday at 8 p.m.
