One Nation, Under God

My first time cruising Malta

I can, in fact, admit that I was wrong.

Growing up, I learned to be pretty frugal with the use of gasoline, so years ago when my wife told me that cruising was a thing, I couldn’t relate and wondered what the point was.

So naturally, when Susan asked me a few weeks ago if I wanted to go on the organized “Cruising Main” event, I snobbishly stuck my nose up.

Though a lot of people throughout the state have been stuck at home during the stay at home order during the COVID-19 pandemic, I have been able to get out and go to work at the PCN. Friday has been the only weekday that I stay at home with the kids throughout the day. So, I haven’t been getting too itchy to leave my house.

On Friday, April 17, Susan wanted to join in on the Cruising Main event, and I told her that she could go with the kids. I didn’t see the point. She declined to go on the cruise without me. I did get out to take a photo of the football field at around 8 p.m. that night and I saw plenty of people still driving around and I started to feel bad that I said no to her request. After seeing the posts on social media and hearing what cruising meant to her I felt even worse.

Still, the cruise did not appeal to me, but I saw what it meant to the community and my beloved. So, a few days later, I told Susan that I would participate in the cruise last Friday. I could sense her excitement immediately!

So, last Friday, we loaded up the car and took a lap. It was great to see so many familiar faces cruising up and down Main Street. It was awkward because I felt the need to wave at every car, but it was cool to see everyone given the state of the COVID-19 crisis. The roads were filled in Malta, a sight that I had never seen before. I was humbled by the sights, sounds, and joy expressed by those that participated.

The boys seemed to enjoy the ride, even though I am not sure they understood what was going on. I am sure they were just happy to get out of the house.
