Werk to play football at RMC

Malta senior Franky Werk became the latest Mustang football player to sign a letter of intent to play football in college after agreeing to play for Rocky Mountain College (RMC) Battlin' Bears next season.

Werk, is the son of Toby and Liz Werk of Hays, and in signing with RMC, he joins former mustang running back Allen Williamson, a 2015 graduate of Malta High School, who is a redshirt junior this spring. Prior to joining RMC, Werk was being looked at by a few colleges including Dickinson State University in Dickinson, N.D., and a school on the east coast.

"I was waiting to hear back from a school in Connecticut, but they didn't even know if they were having school next fall, so RMC was my best option," Werk said.

Werk admitted that going somewhere new would have been exciting but his mother Liz is relieved that he is close to home. Werk had an official visit with RMC last February and he has attended football camps at the school throughout his high school career and he feels that he knows the place pretty well.

"I like that the campus is small," He said.

Though he knows RMC Head Coach Chris Stutzriem, he has no idea exactly where he will play on the field. Werk was an All-Conference selection in the 2018 season as a junior offensive lineman, and that's where Werk believes he will be used.

"I'm not complaining about it because I love being on the offensive line, manhandling people," Werk said.

Werk has had the dream of playing college football since his freshman year and he shared words of wisdom for those that want to reach the same goal.

"Just trust yourself," Werk said. "You know what you are capable of. I figured it out on my own."

Werk knows that college football is going to be tough, so he said he plans to work hard.

Werk said that his favorite football memory was Malta's win over Glasgow this past season. The Mustangs defeated Glasgow 16-8 and earned a birth into the Class B Football Playoffs with the win.

"It was a nice and close game," Werk said. "It was tough because it is always a rivalry game."

He shared one lesson that he learned from being a Malta Mustang.

"You gotta have pride," Werk said. "You gotta have pride in what you do and who you are playing for. That's the big thing that Malta taught me."

Werk plans to study equine therapy at Rocky Mountain College.
