Men's Golf League, week 2

Somerfeld's hole-in-one creates buzz at course

It’s not every day someone hits a hole in one, but that’s exactly what Malta’s Travis Somerfeld did on Sunday, May 17.

Somerfeld is a member of Team Independence Bank and his hole-in-one was mentioned by several golfers during the Men’s League event on Thursday, May 21. The PCN asked the former Malta High School Golf Coach and current Activities Director about the feat.

He said that he was golfing with former MHS standout Kendall Denham and former Malta basketball assistant coach Orin Johnson. Hole 7, was the scene of the shot.

“I hit with a pitching wedge,” Somerfeld said. “It two-hopped and went in.”

At the conclusion of the story, Independence Bank Captain Casey Cote said, “COVID was lifted, phase two here we come!”

The rain clouds were lifted last Thursday as well. Malta was drenched Wednesday night as storm cells passed through town.

“It is late-May and the golf course is in incredible shape,” said Marian Hills Men’s Golf League President Tony Kindle. “The course manager Cory Shelhamer is the best man that we could have for this job. He does an incredible job and so does his help.”

Kindle also said that Marian Hill Golf Course owner Jane Ereaux does an incredible job of managing the course. He also mentioned that Clubhouse manager Barb Waters does a fantastic job.

“There is nothing like this on the Hi-Line,” Kindle said. “No one has this type of facility and the people that work hard to keep it as good as they can.”

The PCN caught up with Jim Heikens, who golfs for Team Ed Buechler Insurance.

“It is a beautiful day to golf,” Heikens said. “I just love getting together with the guys and playing the game of golf.”

He is encouraged with how things are going with his team but he also said that it is what it is.

Cote and Team Independence Bank seemed optimistic about their team this season. Cote praised every member of his squad.

“I’m just happy to be amongst so many great athletes tonight,” Cote said. “Travis Somerfeld, our D golfer had a hole-in-one on Sunday. I’m thinking that this year is the year we do it. I am just really excited about our crew.”

After two weeks Team Prairie Designs still leads all teams. The team added 21 points and have a total of 44.50 points. Team LR Simpson Construction is second with 41 points, and Marian Hills is third with 37. Art’s Furniture had the second-best total in week two with 20.50 points.
