Dodson Speedway held first race of 2020

On Saturday, June 13, the Dodson Speedway was open as the sights and sounds of AMX racing were seen and heard around the Fairgrounds.

The event drew a larger crowd than normal according to Dodson AMX Racing President Keith Cowan and several other locals. There was a total of 12 cars.

"For it being the first event of the year, and dealing with everything that we have had to deal with throughout the last few months, I think it's going good," Cowan told the PCN. "We have a fair amount of drivers and cars."

The A-Main was won by Jason Jessen, who had just edged out Dustin McKinney. Dave McCoy was third. Mike Plouffe won the Super Stock event.

The B-Main was won by David Jaynes, who declined an invite to the A-Main. McKinney was second in the B-Main and accepted the invitation to the A-Main. Jeremy Jesson was third in the B-Main.

"It's pretty awesome for a first event of the year," Cowan said. "We don't normally get as many fans as we have here on the smaller races."

The first event of the year was held on a Saturday as opposed to the group's typical Sunday meeting.

"We decided to try things a little different this year," Cowan said when asked about the day change. "We wanted to see if we could draw more families and maybe a few more cars."

Cowan and the group figured that if drivers came out on a Saturday, they may like having the extra day to recuperate, rather than try to get home late on Sunday with their families. Cowan said that AMX racing is a family event, and pointed to the stands which were comprised of many children.

The race featured racers from Malta, Dodson, Great Falls, Lewistown, and other areas. That day, the track welcomed a new set of eyes as Nick Nowak President of BGM Racing in Lewistown, Mont., attended.

"I just came here to support these guys," Nowak said. "I know about three-quarters of the guys racing. I just wanted to come out here and show support and my kid loves it."

Nowak felt that the races ran smoothly that day. He also said that he felt that the track prep was good.

"There were some really close races and it was a lot of fun to watch," Nowak said.

Like Dodson's AMX races, BGM has been limited to two races.

"With Covid, things have been kind of messed up so we are having two races this year," Nowak said.

The next Dodson AMX Racing event is scheduled to take place at the Phillips County Fair, the event that most local racers prepare for.

"Fair race is a big deal to us," Cowan said. "We get more fans during the fair races. We race because we like to race but we also like to put on a show. The more fans we get, the more fun it is."

During the fair event, Dodson AMX shells out more cash in terms of payouts, with the help of the P.C. Fairboard.

"The stakes are a lot higher, so things are running harder," Cowan said. "A lot of guys are using this race as a test and tune."
