Golf League Updates for July 8, 2020

MENS LEAGUE

The second half of the Marian Hills Men's Glad League has started and there are only four more spots up for grabs as the season continues.

Already qualified for the tournament are Team Prairie DeSigns, Team Mint Bar, Team Art's Furniture, and Team Marian Hills Golf Course.

Prior to week 6 on Wednesday, June 24, Jim Heikens of Team Ed Buechler hit a hole in one at hole #4 using a 7-iron.

"I just got over the water and didn't even see the ball go into the hole," Heikens said. "It was awesome."

According to Heikens, Jason Ulrich whispered, "Jim, it's in the hole!"

After the hole-in-one Heikens' day only got worse.

"It all went plum to heck," he said.

Heikens shared that his approach to the game of golf is just to do the best that he can.

Despite punching their tickets Team Marian Hills is ahead after the season reset two weeks ago. Team Marian Hills has a total of 39.5 points. Team Westside Casino is second with a total of 38, Team Bank of Malta is third with 36.5, Team LR Simpson is fourth with 36, Team Independence Bank is fifth with 35, and Team Mint Bar has 34.

Team Westside Casino had a week 8 high of 25.5 points. The Low Gross went to Gordon Webb who scored a 36. Low Net went to Tim Kindle who had 29. Long Drive A/B went to Tony Kindle. Long Drive C/D went to Cohen Ereaux. The closest to pin #7 was Webb and Long Putt at Hole #8 went to Laurin Salsbery.

During the event, the PCN caught up with Art Lundstrom of Team Art's Furniture. He shared that hole 4 was his favorite. He also shared how his day went.

"I've been busy," Lundstrom said. "I got up at 6 and went to coffee, did a bunch of stuff, went to the lake, mowed the lawn, and now I am golfing."

He said that hole 4 is his favorite because of the water hazard. He also admitted that he only makes it over the water half of the time.

Lundstrom has golfed at Marian Hills Golf Course for 15 years but has played golf for 35 years. He said that his best game of golf was a 46, five years ago.

"I was golfing with Jack Lind and it was the first time I had golfed that spring," Lundstrom said. "I bragged about it a little bit and I called our son Kevin and I said I got a 46 and he said, just wait. It went downhill from there."

WOMENS LEAGUE

The Women's Golf League capped off their first-half last Wednesday, July 1 at the conclusion of week 4. Team First State Bank and Team Tin Cup both qualified for the postseason.

As the placing sit right now, Team First State is in the lead. Team Tin Cup is second, Team Art's Furniture is third, Team Bank of Malta is fourth, Team Independence Bank is fifth and Team Bishop Building is sixth.

Low Gross went to Kaydel Stiles who scored 43. Stiles also tied with Karey Bishop and Julie Snellman for a Low Net of 33. Nancy Salsbery scored the most points individually with 9.50.

Despite heavy rain occurring prior to and during the first hour of the game, Jamie Ulrich of Team Tin Cup enjoyed her day.

"It was good," Ulrich said. "Any day is a good day to be out golfing no matter how the weather is."

Ulrich said that the rain did not slow things up and that the golfers took three hours to complete their weekly game. Golfing in the rain came at a cost for Ulrich, who had been having a solid season so far.

"I had been doing great until last night and I am going to blame it on the weather," Ulrich said. "I'm just going to practice more and hope that the weather is nice."

Ulrich, who also drives around beverages for the Men's League was asked what her favorite hole at Marian Hills was.

"The 19th Hole is the best hole," Ulrich said, speaking of the Tin Cup's relaxation and drinking area.

Ulrich shared the difference between when she started playing in league years ago compared to now.

"I've been in Women's League for a long time and the difference in women from when I started to now is that this group of girls are in it to have fun."

According to Ulrich, the Women's Golf League needs a beer cart driver during their weekly event, preferably, "a hot, young man."
